My family comes from Enfield, NC… My GGG Grandfather Jessie Whitaker (wife’s name is Christianna) was born in 1842 and my other GGG Grandfather Peter Lane (wife’s name is Winnie Bellamy) was born in 1813… The earliest I can find them on a census is 1880. I cannot find any other record on Peter Lane prior to 1880 except a marriage certificate from 1866. I find nothing on him after 1880.. Jessie Whitaker left NC in the 1890’s and is found on the census for Mississippi in 1900 and 1910. The Lanes and Whitakers intermarried a few times in the 1800s (2 sons of Peter Lane married 2 daughters of Jessie Whitaker)… I have a picture of Jessie and he is light skinned. Growing up I always heard that we were “Red Skin”. I am trying to find what Native tribe my family may have come from. . . The legend is that in the late 1800’s a white man came to Enfield, NC and offered people a train ride to Mississippi.
