Thanks so very much for posting that recent article on our “Carmel Indians”… my direct maternal line were “those” people they discussed in the article as well as in the Ball/Kessler book, which I have read and re-read…LOL. Some of my cousins still yet live in and around the area mentioned and I have visited the area a few times myself and paid respects to some buried in the Carmel Cemetery etc. The article author said it best when he described the discrimination that they endured and still today…just mentioning the term “Carmel Indian” can quickly lend the listener a quirky look or shift of topic. I cannot speak with any clarity about the supposed Shawnee/remnant native population that others ellude to…all we ever heard by way of oral tradition was “Cherokee”…and the term Melungeon didn’t flit in my ears until just over a year ago…I am almost now perfectly convinced that my maternal ancestors were in fact a mixture of cultures and races but defining them precisely will take some serious doing and digging and delving galore. Hopeful though I may be…examining them is “sticky” on a great genealogy day…for they truly did not own land or have deeds and wills to examine…they were subsitance and tenant farmers primarilly and they travelled often and re and inter-married excessively. To give due credit to the “family” that was photographed in the article: the photo is of Bessie “Rella” Nichols(1917-1983), daughter of: Burnam Nichols & Malissa “Coon” Collins; she being 1 of 12 children. Rella married Mahlon Eugene Wisecup/Nichols in 1936 and she is pictured with 4 of her 7 children, namely: Russel, William , James & Harvey. Rella is buried in the Carmel Cemetery in Highland Co, OH, having died from a Heart Attack…she was, according to older relatives, a very very nice and kind and hard-working woman and a “right good cook” too…she lived a rough life and was ultimately abandoned by her husband Mahlon. Mahlon was a “shady character” putting it politely and he was, in fact put to death in 1949 for murdering his step-father, Honey Grant Nichols. His mother, it was said, was the most amazing woman who possessed abilities way beyond her years and education; she delivered via mid-wivery, well over 500 babies in and around the Carmel settlement. Mahlon’s father was from a German immigrant family. I feel compelled to say a special “thank you!” to my cousin Donny for filing in so many details about Rella and her family…he knew her personally and her mother in law (Flory Nichols) even delivered him…and he speaks nothing but kind words of both Rella and Flory…it is through his eyes, and those of the remaining older folks in our family that we have learned and gleened so very much. You’re right, Sammaroq, the article is an interesting one to read. It doesn’t tie into the lines that I’m researching right now, but I’m really learning a lot about my own country.

I have heard the same Cherokee story in my family and I still cannot figure it out, and have only found that my family is a definate mix of cultures. Have you heard of the Cole Nation? I am curious, as Arch Gibson was married to Vashti (Basheba Cole). Wondering if there is a connection?

Looking for information on E’None Cole married to Alvin Douglas Bean and had a child named Michael Douglas Bean. I think S.C. or GA. Some of this information is still yet ruff so not a lot to go on.

I found an old post regarding an article about the Carmel Indians. I have the Kessler/Ball book. The picture on page 63, the girl holding the child, I swear…..it is me!! I forgot all about sharing that on this site since it is so very weird. You know how when you see an old picture of yourself you always know who it is??? When I opened that page I was stunned. It is not a picture that “looks” like me….IT IS me! I have no idea when that pic was taken but just read more in the article that gave me the chills. I just posted on the Catawba discussion that my family has buried the information, all the dates have been fooled with. What I do know is that my GGGrandmother & Aunt Jane doctored the people in the community & delivered the babies. The child the girl is holding is the spitting image of my niece. The woman next to her, looks like my cousin & my mother. It is very very strange. I do believe in reincarnation & because of all the research I have done, I now believe that we keep coming back in our families or origin. I just never knew the name of the person who is me on that page & don’t know who to ask!! I honestly am not as weird as I sound…..it is simply an amazing experience & that is why I cannot give up. My GGrandmother is suppose to be Kate Amanda Nichols but I cannot find her with the mother she is suppose to have had which was Jane Marshall. I have alot of buried & redirected birth dates & names. If I knew the name of the person in that pic I might be able to figure this out. The web address article is not online anymore.

I know this is an old post and as far as I can tell there is a ton of information on here linked to Gibson/Gipson and also Carmel Indians. I am new to the whole Melungeons history, as I am trying to find information on my Great grandparents Tyre/Trya Gibson and wife I am not certain of for my grandmother has her name on her death certificate as Martha (Phillips) and her marriage licence has Natchie (Phillips), yet I found a couple census that has her listed as Patsy.
I do believe I am on the right track here as my father always claimed to have Indian in him, and his sister stated that many believed my Great grandmother had a mixed racial in her.
If anyone can lead me to any information on these names I would appreciate it!!
