Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Barry and I feel like the Living Villages are some of the best events of the year. One is coming up this weekend in Hillsborough. Something really special is going to happen.
Lawrence Dunmore is going to teach anyone interested an old Saponi dance. There’s a sound file online of the song (Barry, what’s that link?) Barry mentioned it to Lawrence. When Lawrence heard it he realized he knew the dance, so we’re all going to take a stab at it.
This site is a replica of a real village which stood four miles or so away. They’re doing a dig there I heard a very interesting story about. Whenever they stumble across a burial they call John Blackfeather in to do a smudging so that they can re-bury it properly. There’s an albino hawk that nests near there who seems to get upset when they get near a burial, and hovers around until it’s put back to rest.
This is special ground. I’m expecting it to be quite a wonderful experience bringing this dance home.
