I live in east tennessee and all of my family are from e. tn., sw. va., and nc.
I am looking for any info I can get to help fill in the family tree.
My mother claimed to be part Indian and my father’s side is said to be melungon.
Thanks clb
September 28, 2007 at 12:21 am #28524Welcome, clb, glad you found your way here. Can you post the surnames and locations in your family to the “Share Genealogy” section and some of what you know about them ? It’s best to use the main names as part of the title. This helps others in the future who are looking for those names to find your posts.
Have you heard about Wiliam Byrd yet? He was an aristocrat in the colonial government who went on an expedition to survey the border between vA and NC. He wrote about the Indian people along the way. Quite a colorful character whose writings were sometimes a bit ribald. Some researchers have seen occurences of the Byrd name in what they believed were Saponi-descended families. Some have also felt that about the Morgan name. You’ve probably come across some posts about the Bowling name, and Woodard comes up in families felt to be Nottoway.
September 28, 2007 at 12:21 am #28534Hi clb,
Welcome!
Many of your surnames are the same ones from my neighborhood in sw VA (stone’s throw from NC). Off the top of my head, I recognize Purcell, Woodward, Hensley, Steele, & Willis. Oh, and of course Bowling. :~D
Morgan is part of a road name near where my folks live. The aforementioned William Byrd camped right down the road from there, at Matrimony Creek.
September 28, 2007 at 12:21 am #29078How about that. Just stumbled upon some research that (if correct) would add the surname Steele to my own list. It’s listed as Steel (without the e on the end).
CLB, were any of your folks from Washington CO. or Patrick Co, VA?
