I appreciate the offer of help. I thought the “Cree” Indian line was going to remain an unsolvable mystery. When my mother was a young girl, her grandmother Inez Crabtree Walker told her that there were Indian ancestors in both her Crabtree family and her husband’s Walker family. She mentioned a full blood Indian woman and a half Indian woman who married into the families. The only tribe name mentioned was ”Cree”. I assume that would be only for one of the women, but I don’t know. My mother told me the story when I was a child. Neither she nor I knew anything about the “Cree”. We live in East TN and had never heard of the tribe. Our family has been in East TN about 200 years. When I got older, I decided to research the “Cree” tribe. Found out they live in Canada! We have no known connections with Canada. I asked my mother to confirm what she was told by her grandmother. I asked her could she have said CREEk or CheroKEE. She was sure it was Cree. We were both stumped. A Canadian Cree in East TN 150 – 200 years ago did not seam plausible. A week ago I was reading a book about the lost colony of Roanoke and came across an Indian tribe name of Coree. It hit me that depending upon the syllable accent, the name may sound like Cree. I live near Maryville, TN and it is pronounced “Murrville”. I found this we site and posted the question. Linda was nice enought to answer that it is a very reasonable possibility. Wow! A possible explanation to “Cree”.
Sory for the long intro. I thought it necessary to explain why I was looking for help. I know nothing about NC Indian tribes, except the Cherokee. Bill Childs invited me to place my genealogy in this section where I may be able to receive help. I’ll put the Crabtree female side in now and do the Walker side later.

May 5, 2006 at 5:22 am #21100Hi White Hawk!
Creed is also a surname..I have a Lucy Creed born circa 1705 Prince Ga co VA..married Joseph Tanner..Lucy daughter of Matthew Creed and ?…Creed is a name then passed down in lines as a first name. This is one of my direct lines. Also Walker from way back. Sue J
May 5, 2006 at 5:22 am #21130The Creed name is not found in my familiy line. There may have been a Creed that married into the related Edgemon line mentioned. I do not know any Creed in this area. Is it a common name in that area of VA? My mother was a Galyon. Fairly common in several counties around here, but very rare else where.
May 5, 2006 at 5:22 am #21132I think SAJ was pointing out that “CREED” is a surname and to have that name turn up as a ‘use-ful’ name in a family may point to an earlier ancestor whose surname was CREED, whether that is a recognized surname of an ancestor at this time in your research or not.
After all, (almost) by definition, most ancestors are ‘unknown’ .

Did you already have this?
Will of George Deatherage, Stokes Co.,NC, March Term, 1807 states:
” Then the profits arising from such sale shall be equally divided be-amongst my children: Nancy, who intermarried with William Edgemon, Bird Deatherage, Abner Deatherage, Ann, who intermarried with George Cloud, Polly Deatherage, Urseley Deatherage, who intermarried with Ashley Johnson, John Deatherage, James Deatherage, William Deatherage, Coleman Deatherage, George Deatherage, and Achilles Deatherage.” Will dated Dec. 10, 1806
He died in Jan of 1807.
The Nancy Johnson who married George Deatherage is a daughter of Gideon Johnson and Ursula Allen. Ursula Allen is a daughter of William Hunt Allen and Mary Owens….cont.
May 5, 2006 at 5:22 am #21156William Hunt Allen is a brother of my direct line Joseph Allen.
Joseph born 1711 in New Kent Co Va.
William born 1709.

May 5, 2006 at 5:22 am #21157Ms. SAJ, I am a direct descendant of a Capt. Gideon Johnson and
Ursly(Ursala) Allen whose parents were William Hunt Allen and Mary Owens. Is there a connection with these people and the Native people of the East Coast?
Thanks
Cliff
May 5, 2006 at 5:22 am #21166Hi Cliff!
I believe there is a connection early on, given the time frame, the areas lived in and families married into. Definate proof? That would be nice but it may never surface. If you use the search button at top of page for names you’ll find a lot to read through.

May 5, 2006 at 5:22 am #21407Wow! I did not have this info. Where were the Allens and Johnsons from? What lines do you suspect NA involvement?
May 5, 2006 at 5:22 am #21429White Hawk,
Sorry to be late in replying…I haven’t had any time the past couple days.
I very much suspect the Allen line for having Native American ties and the Johnson line I just don’t know. But these particular lines were out of New Kent Co Va already circa 1650..and Henrico co Va. I haven’t researched the Johnson line but the Allen line is an ongoing project of mine. Sue J
May 5, 2006 at 5:22 am #21498I did some checking on the internet (always reliable of course) on the family names that connect us, and found we are related to the First Lady, Laura Bush.

The name Deatherage is on the 1790 census for Stokes Co., NC. Kathleen
May 5, 2006 at 5:22 am #22090Some have speculated that Deatherage could have been D’Etherage and originated in France.
May 5, 2006 at 5:22 am #22092I have a dim recollection that Deatherage (variously spelled) was an early commercial name in Nashville, maybe a cabinetmaker; and that it is related to Deaderick (which is one of the original downtown streets there). This would be between 1780-1800, I think. Long time since I read early Nashville history, so I may be mistaken. Used to know a banker named Deatherage in Hopkinsville, KY (50 years ago), for whatever that’s worth.

Cliff, I know almost nothing about Capt. Gideon Johnson. Would you fill me in please. He is an ancestor of First Lady Laura Bush, you, and myself. Possible many more on this forum.
I found web info that traced the line back to a castle in Scotland. I do not know anything avout him though.
Thanks,
