Hello,
My gr-grandfather’s mother or grandmother was supposedly Indian. Here is his photo Jessie J. Dunn:
Ironically, I’ve talked with descendants of his sister that had been told the same story! I think that’s always neat when the families haven’t been together for almost 100 years and still know the same story. None of them can remember though if it was their mother or grandmother.
His mother was Amanda Dunman b 1858(married John W. Dunn b 1855 TX). I’ve worked on the Dunmans and other experienced Dunman researchers trace them to LA. Dunmans came to TX during the Republic days (1830’s).
His grandmother was Eliza (b1826 AL) married to John W. Dunn b 1823 AL.
I traced the family backwards on census records. Then ended up in the north Harris County area of Humble, TX by 1880’s.
1870-Harris County (precinct 4 (don’t know where that is)…John is dead, Eliza a widow with all children and grown children living next door.
1860-Shelby County, TX which is on the TX/LA border on Hwy 190….road well traveled that goes along the southern gulf states.
1850-Santa Rose County, FL. Child James born FL age 4; other Milly Ann born FL age 1 (all other censuses say the older child was born in AL…only this one says FL and they are in FL so I don’t know which to trust.
So…if Eliza is the Indian, I wanted to figure out her maiden name. A clue comes on this 1850 census. They are living next door to Amos B. Elliot and Martha. They name their first daughter Milly Ann (age 7), too!
Living next door to Elliot is the Athel Seaborn Cobb Family with wife Martha. Other children still living at home are older….James M 19, Seaborn J. 17….etc.
So…checked out some ancestry.com trees and found the family. Sure enough they claim Martha Elliot as a daughter, but Eliza they say was married to Stephen Roberts.
I’m hoping someone out there might have seen some marriage information on these families. I am hoping that Eliza and John W. Dunn married in AL since most censuses support that their first son was born in AL.
Any thoughts?
Sincerely,
Melanie
