Hi Everyone,
I am looking for anyone that has any information of the Moon ancestors. My father said he was 100% Blackfoot and I was told my mother was 50% Blackfoot, 25% Cherokee, and 25% Irish. With the last name of McCaughley there’s no doubt about the Irish :).
Daddy was born in North Gardens, VA near Charlottesville. My grandfather’s name was Samuel Rufus Moon and grandmother’s name was Texanna Powell (Moon).
I would appreciate any leads that the forum may have.
Thank you for your time.

July 30, 2007 at 5:55 pm #27779On the 1900 Albemarle Co., Va Census, Samuel R. Moon is listed as b. “Sept 1855”. His wife Texanna is listed as b. “May 1880”. This is in the Scottsville Magisterial District, where North Gardens Precinct was.
On the 1860 Albemarle census, Samuel, 4, is in the household of Patsy (nickname for Martha) Moon, b.abt. 1802 Va, who I think is his Grandmother, with Mahala, 37 (probably his mother), in the same household. Haven’t found his father nor anything earlier for Texanna altho she should be listed on the 1880 census. What is the source of the info that her maiden name was POWELL?

July 30, 2007 at 5:55 pm #29739I am a Virginia Moon researcher and would love to compare notes with you regarding Samuel R. Moon (b. abt. 1855-d. about 1918) and Texanna Powell/Moon (b.1880 – died after 1930). I have compiled lots of info on the descendants of this pair but would love to have more info that you might know! What was your Dad’s name? Where are your grandparents buried? Your grandmother Texanna lived past the time that I can check death records, where did she die and where is she buried? I know that they had 9 kids (at least) and that I believe there is still one that still lives in Virginia in 2008! I will be happy to share any research that I have done, so please email me either here or privately! Thank you so much for you post!
July 30, 2007 at 5:55 pm #29748Hello Virginia,
I’m sending what little I know about my Moon relations.
If you have information about the Moons, Rouths, Goodes and Smiths (all part
of he “Moon Colony”) I’d love to hear it. I believe the Smiths were Sioux,
but I cannot find any details on Francis Smith 1779 and his wife Mercy Jones
1781. The search is quite fun, though.
Thanks for getting in contact. I’m happy to send you information on other
family lines of mine.
Best of luck in your endeavors.
Suzanne

July 30, 2007 at 5:55 pm #29753Sue, why do you think your Smiths were Sioux? Where did they live?
July 30, 2007 at 5:55 pm #29758Hi Linda,
My gr. grandfather was Dora Moses Cornelius Skinner Smith. There is a strong aural history in my family that one of his grandparents was half native American. Some say Blackfoot ; some say Sioux. I have established it was his Smith side. Many family members look native American. Dora’s ancestors moved from Virginia and North Carolina through Ohio and then to Indiana. They were associated with the Moon Colony in Ohio.
My 4 gr grandfather was Francis Smith born in 1779 probably in W. Virginia; his wife was Mercy (Massa)Jones born in 1781 in Virginia. I can find no record of Francis’s birth or his marriage to Mercy (Massa) Jones or his ancestry. If I could I think that might be the key to finding my native ancestry.
Thanks for asking,
Sue

I got to the bottom of this ID in my family. While there are probably ten different family sources who said our ancestors were ‘Blackfoot’, there is one cousin in Florida who said ‘Blackfoot or Sioux’. This was between five and ten years ago. None of our family are from the Plains so this may have been confusion with ‘Siouan’
