Hey, found a really cool map of Granville County, NC and surrounding counties and It shows the trading path. I was wondering if someone could explain the trading path a little more or dirrect me to where I should look. I see it goes right through Tar River and around the Oxford area where my family is from or at least where they live now. Here is the link. I found it on the Granville County Historical Society website.

A very good map to show the 3 rivers come together….. the Neuse (starting with Eno and Flat and Deep Creek)……… the Tar (starting with Knapp of Reeds) …..and the Roanoke (starting with the Dan)
Sue, do you see your Blue Wing Ck flowing into Roanoke? Does everyone see Deep Ck flowing into the Flat? It’s an interesting geological area……… and a great place to call home 😉
Now we need an early Va map for the picture of the va/nc piedmont area.
Dreaminghawk, I got a shiver seeing the Blue Wing Creek..and just over to the left is Castle crk where Charles Allen and brother Memucan were in 1700’s before coming to Kentucky in early 1800’s. I’m going to print the map and place the names I know of so far on it in their locations and dates. This is so thrilling to me! Sue J

The Roanoke and Dan flow separately into Clarksville, the site of Occoneechee Island. The Roanoke comes from up around Roanoke VA and the Dan comes in from the south through Danville.

They do monthly hikes at locations significant to the path. I’ve been meaning to do some myself.
The map you linked us to must show a later variation on the path. Tom was saying something about it skirting Clarksville at one point to avoid the Occoneechee “tariff.” Maybe that’s what we’re seeing here. I’m not clear on that history myself.
Historical markers on Hwy 15 say the Path passed near it. I live about a mile from Hwy 15. The road leading to my development is called “Old National Highway,” which I’ve surmised to mean older Highway One, which was originally the Path.

Thanks for the map. It would be good to have a permanent place for maps like this for everyone to refer to since all goes back to these areas of origin.

Barry, Linda and rest of the FCSO. You are probably aware of Goodwin Cooper and his family of Mecklenburg County that were Native Americans and at least part Eastern Siouan. In case you don’t have this info, I pass this on at this time. Most often this family appears as Mulattos in the census records (1850 for example under name “Goodin Cooper). But in the 1860 census, where he and the family are living in Clarksville, Goodwin is identified as an Indian.

Goodwin was born in VA about 1802 and married Rebecca Ann Pettiford on 7/August/1844 in Mecklenburg County. Oral history and location indicate that Pettyford/Pettiford surname name is Sapony along with Cooper. I took notice of the Cooper surname many years back when I was researching the Viney/Veny family of Gallia County, Ohio. These Vineys appear in Va. Court records as being “desendents of an indian women in the female lineâ€. A Nancy Viney married a Daniel Cooper, in Gallia county sometime before 1855 (I’l dig up the exact date for you, later). If you come across a Daniel Cooper or any Vineys in Mecklenburg records let me know.

No, I wasn’t aware of them. Thanks so much. I wasn’t aware there were any notations of Indian folks in Mecklenburg records. We’ll have to browse around in 1860 census for Mecklenburg and see if we can find any other similar racial designation. There must have been an unusual census taker that year. As usual, you’ve found something good.
