Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
I’m researching the Mashburn family as I’m descended from Edward Mashburn who was the school master of The school for Chowan Indians in the early 1700’s in what is now Gates Co. N.C.
Edward Mashburn was English, but it is possible that some of his sons may have married Native Women, It is known that one son named Matthew was in Bertie Co. then went to Onslow Co. for a time, before migrating back to the Bertie /Gates co. area.
If I’m correct the Bertie Co. area was territory of the Northern Tuscarora Bands, while the Onslow Co. area was home to the Southern Bands of Tuscarora..
I believe Matthew Mashburn later migrated to the Burke Co. N.C. area, where his son Drury Mashburn married a Woman named Elizabeth Morgan who is said to be of Powhatan Indian descent..
Some of the descendants of Edward Mashburn married into families of mixed-blooded Cherokees.
