I was fortunate enough to do some research for a woman who was a direct descendant of the Mattamuskeet Indians of Hyde Country, NC. She had very interesting photos of her Native Ancestors who were nearly full Native. Here is a very interesting link that may be helpful to people who are from that area or have a known history in association with the Mattamuskeet and the other various tribes that were put on that particular reservation. It also list many surnames of the Native people that were on that reservation and their descendants and other interesting documents and archives.

March 2, 2007 at 2:10 am #25107I am very much interested in the information you said is on the web page. However, the link would not work and web page could not be found by my browser. Can you check and re-post the web site.
Additional info affirms family lore of being descended from the Coree who were ‘stuck’ with the Mattamuskeet Indians after the Tuscarora War.
March 2, 2007 at 2:10 am #25110Hello,
I checked the link and it did work. Try to copy it and paste it in your browser then see what happens. Let me know if this works.
Here it is:

March 2, 2007 at 2:10 am #25112I copied and pasted before sending the last message. It did not work. The direct link of course was tried first, and did not work. I opened a second connection to the Saponitown Forum and the direct link worked in it!
I have sen this page before. It lists a Simmons as a witness to some of the title transfers. Do you know if they would have used indians or whites for witnesses to land title transfers?
March 2, 2007 at 2:10 am #25113Hello,
I really cannot answer that. This page itself is very informative and one of the most interesting that I have ever seen documented on these people. Did you find any relevant information on your family lines here?

March 2, 2007 at 2:10 am #25141The man in my Avatar is a Simmons, my Ggrandfather. His granfather was born in NC somewhere. He is on my father’s side. My mother’s side has the Coree family lore.

Hi. How do know of Ivens Chance? Are you Coharie? I’ve tried to find out information on Ivens Chance for many years now, but to no avail. Many, if not all, of the Sampson and Harnett County Coharie Chances from the Dismal Swamp/Shiloh Church area originate with Ivens Chance. And as best I can tell, the Chances seem to have originally been Mattamuskeet/Machapunga Indians from around Hyde County, NC who migrated into Sampson County. (Which fits Robert K. Thomas’ theory that the Coharie are mostly Hatteras [ and, by geographic implication, Mattamuskeet], joined by some Saponi from Granville and Edgecomb Counties.)

Hi. My Dad’s people are from Antioch/Dunn and often attended Shiloh. My mother’s people are from Holly Grove. I always get lost trying to find my way to Shiloh. (Of course, I also get lost trying to find New Bethel too. 🙂
Growing up and spending most of my 58 years in Baltimore, Maryland probably has a lot to do with that.)
Emanuels are one of my lines… big time. Don’t have any Bledsoe or Burnette lines that I know of. I think I might have a Chance line through my Maynor line, since the Chances and the Maynors intermarried quite a bit, so I’m told.
Do you have Mr. Enoch Emanuel’s 1921 booklet, SKETCH OF THE CLASSIFIED INDIANS OF SAMPSON COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA? Or any of Dr. Stuart Berde’s papers? They’re quite helpful.
By the way, the Coharie Burnettes supposedly link to the High Plains Sappony Indians (formerly, Person County Indians) through one or two (or more?) intermarriages.
Some of my other lines are BREWINGTON, SIMMONS, JACOBS, CARTER, WYNN, WHITEHEAD, GOODMAN, etc.
