Hey Linda or Bill:
I think I may have come across some Census info while searching for my Mayo ancestors. But since it wasn’t my people, I might have thrown it away! 😮 (I’ll never do that again!) I recognize Fannie Boris….but I was used to look for Fannie BOYCE. Anywayz……
My aunt Gloria found a brother and sister (Mayos) in Suffolk VA back in the 1980s, who were originally from Edenton NC. They were born right on the river off Cannon’s Ferry Road (off of Rt. 32). I also found and visited some Beasley/Roundtree families whose close ancestors were Mayos in Edenton NC. We’re trying to connect all three groups of Mayos. If either of you recognize any of these names, could you let me know? The brother is still alive, but the sister died in 2000. They could only remember this much info about their ancestors. (No dates…sorry)
Sister: Maude Mayo (d.2002 – Suffolk VA)
Brother: William “Buddy” Mayo
Father: Charlie Mayo (Edenton NC)
Mother:Lillie Ross
Charlie’s parents:
Father: John Washington Mayo (Edgecombe Co NC) – half Cherokee
Mother: Fannie Boris
John’s father: John Mayo
(I’m assuming he was the Cherokee)
If you’ve got any pinches of clues please let me know. If not, thanx anyways. 🙂
October 7, 2006 at 10:56 pm #23225Hi Roni,
I have some info on Mayo family. It links to both sides of my family. Orpha Elliott Mayo Hooks on my mothers and William Mayo on my fathers side. I will send it to you and then you can post it if you think any fits. There are two John Mayo’s in the listing. It goes back to the 1640 to today on my line. I have no “proof of NDN blood or tri racial but we have wondered for years. Thomas J Hooks was and Indian Trader so maybe.

October 7, 2006 at 10:56 pm #23228Hi Janette….thanks for responding. What my first thought is….if you have it typed out in Word or something, you could copy and paste. Or if you have a scanner, you could scan it onto a clear message. Those are my first thoughts. But maybe someone else like Bill or Linda can better advise you on that….I tend to type out my stuff because it’s usually not much info.
These are Black/Indian people. I don’t recognize Orpha Mayo….was she married 2 or 3 times? I’m assuming Elliott was her maiden name.
But you’ve got a William Mayo….the one I’m looking for is still living in Suffolk VA. He’s probably in his 70s or 80s.
October 7, 2006 at 10:56 pm #23229I wish I was still subscribed to Ancestry.com again! Darn. I’ve been out of the loop for so long. Just griping..sorry. LOL.

Yes i did assume from your Blackindiangirl registered name that you were in search of more of the same. I am a lot of mixed blood and think for sure that black and indian both are all there but it is so difficult to find. Just because of the names i cant tell. My family was very closed mouth about it because by the time of my grandparents they could pass and choose to by not registering etc. My Dad was very dark and we all have black hair. I was hoping if our Mayo lines matched up I could learn more too. It was worth a try.

My Mayos began w/a Richard “Ned Mayo m. Mary “Agy” Roye/Ross. (no dates). Their son was my gggrandfather Samuel Mayo (b.1844) in Edgecombe Co. NC, (d.1919) here in Gloucester VA. So I don’t have any dates or names other than Richard before 1844, that’s probably why I don’t recognize anything. But thanks anyway.
October 7, 2006 at 10:56 pm #23248Roni,
Thanks for coming back to me. I doubt there is a connection as most of my Mayo surnames are early. (Before 1844)
Bill requested the list so he has it all and maybe he will be able to help others find who they are looking for. He is so good at what he does!
Best wishes on your search.

No prob. That’s what were here for…helping each other to try to connect the dots. Thanks for sharing your info w/me. Now Bill, he can work wonders with your stuff, believe me. There are others who may happen upon your notes and bingo! You’ve connected with a cousin! So good luck to you too.:p

October 7, 2006 at 10:56 pm #37675Janette, I believe we are kinfolks. I am interested in comparing notes. I descend from Thomas J. hooks and Orpha Elliot Mayo as well. Do you have a picture of Orpha? I would love to see it. I have a picture of my ggg grandfather George Worthington whose mother was Susan Hooks (daughter of Thomas and Orpha).
