Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
In doing my research, I have found some ancestors who stated in the census that they came from Mecklenburg. At the time, I assumed this was in Europe. Now that I know of Mecklenburg, Virginia, I am thinking this may be what they were referring to.
So my question is this. Do you think it would be common for someone to say they were “from Mecklenburg” on a census, or would they simply say Virginia?
That depends.
If on the census you are referring to, most people have a county and state listed, instead of just their birth state, then ‘Mecklenburg’ may be a county and not a state in Germany.
Well, everyone around this individual has a birth state (NC, TN, etc.)
This person has only Mecklenburg. I assumed it was in Germany at first, but I am not so sure.
What specific census year, state, county, twp etc and page number, are you looking at and I’ll take a look at it.
