July 12, 2005 at 7:56 pm #15665Well, I just got home from Mom’s house. My brother sure has grown outward since he hit his 30’s. LOL I tossed him a stack of papers about 3 inches thick…he’s like what’s this? I said your family tree. I said ” I think you will find some things of interest in there.” He asked were are they from…I smiled and said the Nottoway people, Scotland, Wales and England. He grins and says we are Nottoway? I said yep. We freaked his wife out LOL. We all started pulling at our eyelids to see who had the biggest folds. I won. He and I went out to sit in the swing to talk and he asked what else have you learned. So we started talking about our Scottish ancestors. I have found a document called the Ruthven(Ruffin) family papers. This document is a summary there is a full book written. I told him he needed to read the papers but I would tell him part of it. So he now knows that three of our Ruthven/Ruffin ancestors were beheaded and drawn and quartered pulling there limbs from there bodies and the limbs were put on all four corners of Scotland. He knows one was imprisoned in the Tower of London for 19 years and one escaped to France and later came to America. He knows King James VI owed the Ruthven family 80,000 pounds in 1600. He knows these men who were killed, imprisoned and ran for there lives were the cousins of the same King James VI. He knows we were the wealthiest family in all of Scotland and that when King James killed, imprisoned and ran off the family he took everything they owned and it was not returned until 1945 by King George for valiant and distinguished service in WWII. The descendants of Patrick Ruthven/Ruffin have much of their holdings back and the title of Earl of Gowrie back. Patrick was the one imprisoned in the Tower of London. Ruffin is the American version of the name. The Ruffin family history is a violent and disturbing one. If JamesVI had his way I would not be sitting here right now. So goes my talk with my brother tonight. We are both grateful to William Ruthven/Ruffin for finding a way to escape.

July 12, 2005 at 7:56 pm #15667That’s quite an intresting tale.
I think Scotland’s James the 6th later became England’s James the first, the man famous for translating the Bible into English, The King James Version in 1611.
drawn and quartered? ouch — makes ya wonder if he ever read that Bible . . .

He did the drawn and quartered to their dead bodies. 🙁
And yes, he later became James I of England 1603 I think. Patrick had ran to England which ended up being a big mistake because it was when James became King of England that he was captured and thrown into the tower. He should have went with William to France. And I don’t care how many Bible’s he had translated he was a monster. Of course that opinion is colored with what he did to my family (ancestors). Of course James wrote his version of the story and that was published. Later the Ruthven family papers were found and have since been published as well. There are conflicts in the two stories so I have decided to believe the “real” truth lays somewhere in the middle of both sides of the story.
Have to go we are having a BBQ this afternoon.
