John,
Copied this excerpt here:
Later it was shown that the attacking Indians were not Senecas but northern Mohawks,
abetted by a few Savannahs and renegade Tuscaroras. The Mohawks justified the attack by
saying that three years previously the Catawbas had killed five sleeping Mohawk warriors on the
very night after a treaty of peace had been made. It was also charged that some traders who were
carrying on clandestine and unlawful trade in the Tuscarora towns had informed the Northern
Indians of the unarmed Catawba encampment outside the Fort and thus incited the massacre. In
this connection, Governor Spotswood examined Charles and William Kimball, both interpreters
to the Saponis, and James Lundy and Thomas Reaves. However, there is no record that the
charges were substantiated or the men prosecuted. William Kimball later received for the
Council a 10 frank advance out of his interpreter’s salary.

And the Simon Jeffreys mentioned, Born C1675 in James City co Va Marr. Elizabeth Pottle..she married John Hilliard and Simon. One of their sons, Osborne Jeffreys B C1714 Bertie Co NC, died Franklin Co NC, Dec. 9 1793, has daughter Mary Jeffreys who marries John Hunt, son of Memucan Hunt and Mary Wade. Sarah Hunt, in my direct line, is Memucan’s sister.
I am going to begin today to organize each family name I can and go down the line to try to make sense of all the mixing and criss-crossing of the lines because I am really soooo scattered. Sue J
May 4, 2005 at 2:53 pm #14806Hi Sue,
Thanks for the Kimball information. Interesting also about James Lundy, as I have that name in my family as well but don’t know any details without digging. Any idea if these interpreters married Native women?
By the way, I emailed my cousin and invited him to either join this list or to see if you two could talk directly. I’ll let you know when I hear from him.
Thanks,
John

Thanks so much for contacting your cousin.
And as to the Kimballs marrying native women…I am not the expert in this but I would think if someone spoke the language, they certainly would need to spend time with native speakers to learn it, or relatives, etc. and to me it would seem to be a good bet that they would have some connections. Many of the traders had Native American wives/women and children with them although it was surely not always recorded. I think Bill has taught me to look not only at your line..but who people lived by, who siblings married, etc., EVERYTHING you can find out to get a more total picture. Starts falling into place then. Hopefully. I write everything down I find so if later I find it connects I have it.

Thanks for that link. VERY interesting! There are two Butts (Bott) here, one of my names. I want to forward it to a group of Butt/Green descendents who communicate regularly. The Butt who started the emailing has a grandmother who is undoubtably Indian.
