Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
My mother is from the southside of Virginia. She went to the black schools but, never identified beening black. Her struggle is my struggle now. She is angry and no real self worth at age sixty. We are related to the white Cannons. You might have heard of the famous Cannon murders on Cannons Ferry. The white Cannons will deny our existents. This is a big family name with possible Occaneechi-Saponi heritage. My greatgrandfather Walter Cannon name all of his sons after great military personell. My grandmother Daisy George Cannon (maiden name Boyd) told us her mother was full blooded indian but, no proof.
What would be the easy and reliable way to search my family tree? Any qualified Genealogists?
My husband is a Boyd from southside VA, Boydton to be exact (fancy that). I’m not familiar with the story of the Cannons. Could you fill us in? Whereabouts southside VA are you from?
Where does the George name come from?
My GG Grandfather was Abram Boyd (born 1827)and lived between BOYDton and Clarksville (a couple of miles from Occoneechee Island). His Daughter, my G Grandmother was Margaret Boyd (b1867). There are also Indian Boyd’s in Bracey VA a few miles east of Boydton. Barry Carter
Hello Hozona,
Hopefully you can find help with your research on here. It’ll help your Mom feel better about her family history and the rest of your family also. I know it’s difficult! I had written down information my parents gave me and it’s in a journal, but I still don’t know much. I spent three hours on the Internet this morning looking up towns in South Carolina. It’s tiring ! But I feel encouraged by this board.
