Tanya, the pow wow is held on the fairgrounds, so camping out there shouldn’t be a problem. The vendors will be setting up there on Friday any ways…and we hope to make it up there Friday by late afternoon/suppertime. We always check by there to see who’s made it in.

I went to another website after websearching for “Shenandoah Valley Powwow”.It was a VA tourist site,but I can’t remember the URL.

Anyway,what the problem was on virginiapowwow.com was that the town was listed as “Mt. Jackson”.Actually,it’s Quicksburg,VA and Mapquest indicates

it’s right off the freeway.(I-81)Same address;town was wrong.

I may go there.Should take me about 1 1/2 hrs.

I think this etiquette is meant for the general public, not the dancers. It would be like telling people at church that are overwhelmed with emotion to be quiet. Dancers vocalize according to what they are feeling…so if the spirit is moving you….I think it would be ok.

The website also mentions not photographing grand entry…that is different at each pow wow. Most of the time it is ok, in my experience only once have I heard it requested not to photograph grand entry. And some allow photos of Veteran’s dance, it just depends…always a good rule of thumb..listen to the emcee.

Some of that etiquette does not apply everywhere, for sure.

Shouldn’t be hearing anyone but Native women making the sound often imitated in cowboy movies.

Male dancers got their own sounds, too.
