As I have researched my husbands family there names are Monteith. But in the 1600 it was Menteith and in the 1100 in Scotland his family was the Royal family of Scotland, they where the Stewards. There father was Walter (High Stewart) Steward and his wife was Mary (heiress of sisters) Menteith, they had two sons John and Alexander, both boys thought they would use there mothers last name and that is how names can change and also saying the name to other people for census records can also changed there name.
