Hello all……My name is Mike Canter. I am located in the NE Ohio area…removed from SE Ohio, the beginnings of Appalachia. Was born in a holler in 1943..no running water or inside plumbing until I was gone and married in 1963. So I was raised with the wisdom of the Appalachian Mountain People’s ways. i could skin a deer and run a trot line and shoot like Dan’l Boone.
But that’s not why I’m here.
My Gram Lura Applegarth (McAllister maiden) told me that her grandma was Blackfoot and Sioux. I do not know her maiden name…only her first and middle initial of Susan A. She was born circa 1838 in Va…married an Irishman named Doyle, had at least two daughters…Mary Ann and Sarah. Mr. Doyle abandoned them and left for Ireland. Susan then married George Shears. A lot of this took place in Preston County, Va (now WVA). Mary Ann Doyle is my gr grandma, Susan my gr gr grandma. They all ended up in Belmont County, Ohio…except for Mary who went to Sheridan, Wyoming around 1920 until death.
Can anyone shed any light on my dilemna…..I wish to know my gr-gr-grandma Susan A’s maiden name and her Native American connection.
Also….My other Gram Canter ( maiden Perdue) came from Boone County W.Va…her ancestors from Maryland thru the center of Va to Franklin County..then to Boone and then to Belmont , Ohio.
She also claimed Native American roots, but could not tell me from where or who…I have a suspicion that she also had Melungeon connections…lots of blue eyes/dark haired folks in my family…now even four of my grandsons are blue eyed/dark hair.
Also large incisors…and the ridge on the back of the head.
I promise I won’t ramble like this all the time…but I just gotta know…somehow..sometime.

Glad you got the board working, Mike. Welcome. I’m hoping we can find out more about your family. The combination of Blackfoot and Sioux ID’s is really intriguing. I can’t recall if I’ve heard that before.
Don’t rule out that the Maryland originating people couldn’t be part of the Blackfoot ID too. There was a Blackfoot Town documented in Maryland ca. 1740. Tutelo are documented to have been there at that time, and they’re one of the Siouan tribes the Blackfoot ID appears to be a marker for.

I’m glad to see you made it too. If there’s anything I can tell you, it is that now that you’re here you may never want to leave. There is more knowledge pooled together in this one place than anywhere I could imagine and everyone are the most wonderful folks you could ever hope to know. Now that I have finally made it here (technically challenged) I welcome anyone’s advice and opinions concerning my search as decribed above.
Gram use to say she was Sioux and Blackfoot……NOW I think she may have been saying Siouan Blackfoot…just an x and a d apart in spelling but a mile in meaning.
I am a subscriber to ancestry.com and although many folks don’t like them…I am a huge fan and use them for 90% of my research. If anyone wants a lookup in any census except 1890…..just holler at me and I’ll be glad to do it…..no charge…I have been helping folks find their roots for three years cause I like doin it and it keeps me busy since being disabled in 2001.

😉 yep, that reminds me of my dad. He pronounced it Sioux-poni instead of Saponi. He was from Indiana in the 1920’s and I don’t think he got past the 8th or 9th grade. Love & Light, Lynella.
My grandmothers maiden name is Gibbons,we are blackfoot .Does anybody have any imfo.Her mothers last name is not known because it was said it was dangerous

🙂 Wow, that’s a good question for someone like Bill. He knows lots of stuff and how to find what he don’t know! So, I would go to the Geneology Forum, cause that’s his forte’ and address the post to him and repost your info. there for him and as soon as he gets time, he’ll get back to you. How are you? Good to see you here. Have you ever heard of the “Carmel Indians”? These people are from Ohio as as far as I can tell are probably related to other similar gorups that have lost their real identity. Are you related to them?
If you are not sure, you can just google up “Carmel Indians” and probably find many links to them. You can also do a search for Ohio Indians or Carmel Indians right here on this forum and come up with past research folks here have done.

Hello Vance and all,
I’m aware of the Ohio Carmel Indian settlement in Highland County, Ohio and there is also a patch of these folks in Zanesville, Ohio, although the Zanesville group are more like the Melungeons of Tennessee.
You see my other side, the Perdews came thru SW Va and then into WVA and then Ohio…and they married into families with the names of Dillon, Hill, Green, Cole, etc…all with some type of Native Blood connection…also it is said that back in the 1700’s William Uriah Perdue married one Edith Powell whose Indian name was Mourning Hale…..but no proof there either. If she was in fact Indian,…she would have been of one of the Powhatan tribes around Chesterfield County, Va.

Not to sound stupid, but I am new at this so if someone can help me out that would be great. What does the above quote mean? I am interested in particular about the ridge on the back of the head, are these chareteristics of certain tribes? if so which ones? and the teeth?
I believe what’s being they’re talking about are Native American traits in general, not specific to any tribe.
