Hello!
I’m so excited to finally be here! Reading these posts but not being able to respond has been distracting because I’ve been seeing family names of people I went to school with….Lacks, Logans, Wilsons, Guy…!
I’m from Halifax, VA. My fathers family hails from Richmond and I know little to zilch about them. I have a picture and if I could go by “he looks Indian” I would have to say that I have a strong suspicion that he is of Native American background. Our last name is Adams
Now on my mothers side, according to family history/tradition, Great-great grandma Mary was a full blood Cherokee. I know, I know, I’ve heard the probability of it not being true from Mr. David Cornsilk himself:rolleyes: but I’m seeking the truth. Grandma’s surname may have been Palmer. She married my Great-great grandfather Milton Waller. They were on the 1870’s census. The census listed them as black, but they supposedly had one black and several mulatto children from the same parents! Then I started reading about the Race Law of 1823 and the Racial Integrity Law of 1924(?) There are no records of Milton being a slave or free that we can find. I have begun to wonder if our family has Monacan/Saponi ancestry. One thing is certain, my family is of mixed heritage (but we are listed as black in the census).
I am VERY new to geneology but I am fascinated. Any help that you could give me would be wonderful.
