He was appointed a captain in the militia in 1810 and John Noe was named the Commissioner of Tax in Captain Skidmore’s company in the same year. The names of thie neighbors in the 1810 census make it certain that John Skidmore lived in that part of Knox County which is now Harlan. His company was incorporated into the 54th regiment of KY militia during the War of 1812 and he is carried on the rolls at Frankfort as a captain throughout the war.
He had taken his family by 1812 to what is now Lawrence (then Floyd) County, KY. On May 15, 1820 he was appointed surveyor of the road leading from Georges Creek to the Forks of the Sandy in place of Lewis Ringsberry. Georges Creek still survives as a place-name in Lawrence County, and he no doubt lived in the vicinity. He was enomerated later in the same year with a family (reduced by marriage) to two sons and two daughters living at home. Lawrence County was formed in 1821 and he appears on the first tax list in 1822 with two white tithables (himself and his son James). He was the only tithable in 1823 and 1824, and owned two horses in all three years.
On July 18, 1822 John Skidmore went to court and obtained a license to marry Prudence Arnold. They had presumably been married in a religious ceremony back in Burke County, NC but without the benefit of any kind of legal registration. Prudence was almost ecrtainly his only wife. Despite having gone to the trouble to obtain a license getting the ceremony legally on record seems to have been a low-priority matter. They were not married in KY until almost a year later when R. Burnes, a Minister of the Gospel officiated and made a return on the license to the courthouse.
John Skidmore and his son James are both missing from the 1825 tax list. James Skidmore went (by 1830) to Morgan County, Ky and eventually on to IL and MO. Prudence and John Skidmore disappear for the next 26 years. John Skidmore (together with his other sons Elijah and William P.) are all missing from the census records in 1830. Elijah and William had problems by the law in this period and it may have been in their interest to maintain a low profile. Presumably they were back on the French Broad in NC.
He is also missing in the 1840 census but in 1850 he and Prudence (age 81 and 80) surface in Decatur Twp, Lawrence, OH where they are living with their daughter Martha (Patsy), the widow of Hiram Biggs. Presumably they died there soon after, but no probate or gravestones have been found for them in Ohio or elsewhere.”
I”m not a very knowledgeable geneaologist because I really don”t know how to do my own research but I”m really good at finding people on the web and getting info from them:-)here”s what they”ve sent me.I don”t understand a lot about sources and ID numbers i just put it all on my program and hope it”s right.i have no idea how to verify it.this is what I have.it appears were looking at different people.I”ve seen info on the people your referring to whil checking out family trees online but don”t believe their my family.my family seems to come out of md and va first then to wilkes county nc area and surrounding counties hence to wise county va and then to lawrence, carter counties ky.is this a typical saponi migration from va?

October 15, 2005 at 1:58 am #17228Al,
Thanks for the complete information that you have.
My questions were not challenages – I’m just looking for the documented premises for your statements to shed additional light on the subject in which we are all engaged.
It’s not a ‘put-down’. Just recheck your information….
Ask yourself what makes you think that the information you have “received” from others’ assertions are in fact true?
If ‘they’ haven’t even bothered to research which county courthouse records someone would need to look at in order for ‘anyone else’ to independantly verify the information ‘they’ assert, can you or I accept what ‘they’ assert to be “true”, IS true? No, of course not. Send me an email if you’re uncomfortable discussing this on an open forum, happens all the time.
We hope you come back.

October 15, 2005 at 1:58 am #17233not uncomfortable at all Bill.I just don”t know how to ascertain if it”s true or not without putting more time and money into it then I have trevelling to va,ky and nc and possibly even indiana
now.:-) maybe when I retire I can check all this out.when i had an ancestry . com membership i was checking a lot of census clips online but with this dial up modem connection of 28800 it took forever to find anything.thats it,when i retire I”m gonna splurge and get a cable connection and an rv and I”m headin south.:-) The little I know of my dads family I coulda found out up here but as i was web hunting on him I hooked up with a first cousin i never knew for 40 years and she has given me the whole family lowdown and has it all documented.his side appears to be pure white and yankees, shhh!!! dont let that get out.moms on the other side appears to be scotch irish melungeon hillbillies.when i was born the doctor asked my mom if i was oriental, she said heavens no.maybe the doc could see back further then mom could:-)
when someone has a bunch of sources under their info on a person does this mean its trustable or do I catually need to go to courthouses and see this stuff with my own eyes to trust it?I mean I”m not exactly proud to be descended from a slave trader and if I lose him it”s no big deal but theirs some others i dont wanna lose like my third gr grandpappy who was a confederate guerilla in ky and was murdered by yanks it would seem in april 1865.he was never found but theirs a real long revenge fued type story to it.he was poppy”s granddad and very well researched it would seem,I hope!:-)
thanks for your help.

October 15, 2005 at 1:58 am #17243It’s always best to try to verify what others post and publish.
The contents of many cited sources can be found online without having to go anywhere. It’s not a good idea to buy genealogical reference books unless it is specifically for a geographical area your people were known to have been AND you haven’t found the information you’re searching for on ancestry.com or genealogy.com or some other subscription service.
Here’s an example of verifying information:
From the Skidmore book you quoted, the authors say that John Skidmore is shown as owning 13 slaves on the 1810 Knox Co., Ky census. That census is online thru ancestry.com.
When you look at that census page, John Skidmore does NOT have any slaves listed for him. Instead, further out on the margin of this and every page, this census taker has added the categories of Slave, Colored, Female & Male for that page & then his running total. On the census page containing John Skidmore’s listing, the page total for the column listing the number of slaves, is “13”. The handwritten “Slaves” and below that, “13”, is just above the “Females 196”, etc, but well out in the margin.
The authors say John Skidmore is on the 1800 Burke Co., NC census. This “John Scidmore” does not own any slaves either, nor does the 1820 Floyd Co., Ky, John Skidmore. It would appear that he didn’t own any slaves when these 3 censuses were taken.
So, there are ways to verify some pieces of information without having to travel.
John Berry’s wife Rebecca reportedly died in 1830.
A John Berry did marry Kessiah Lambert on 17 January, 1837 in Lawrence Co., Ky.
John Berry, 57, b. Va., and wife Kessiah Berry, 44, b. Va (Kanawha Co., now WVa), are the Berry’s I referred to earlier as being on the 1850 Lawrence Co., Ky census.
This John Berry is shown on the 1860 Lawrence Co., Ky census as 69 yrs old, or, born in 1791.
The index for the ancestry.com genealogy tree you referred to for Richard Thompson, b. 1742, does show “Spouse: Elizabeth Unknown”.
When you open that tree, there is no Elizabeth listed as his wife. His wives are Margaret Barr and Mildred Short. The later I suspect is incorrect. That tree has plenty of obvious errors and contradictions in it but you might be able to use it as a ‘roadmap’ as long as you can verify pertinent information.

October 15, 2005 at 1:58 am #17244the info i have on richard thompson shows margaret barr as his wife but she supposedly died and he moved to ky and somewhere along the line met and married elizabeth moore who was supposedly listed as cherokee.i know moore is supposed to be a cherokee name.I”ll try and see what i can dig up with what you”ve given me.I appreciate the help.If you could possibly find any info on alexander goins that I don”t have let me know.theirs several people researching him.he”s my 4th gr grandad of which I”m reasonably sure.he was murdered in stonega va(wise county) and was living in lawrence county ky when this happened in 1844.he was supposedly either a horse trader or horse thief depending on whose story your going by.his whole story is online.i have info that claims he was born in 1802 in NC but this is less reliable then his death date and residence.i have his childrens info too.he”s the one supposedly married to mary skidmore.i found his grave in the woods beside the road he was killed on.he was buried where he dropped and theirs two rockpiles 12 ft apart at his head and feet.this grave occasionally flood when the creek comes up.
thanks again,i really could do without the slave tradin:-)
