I sent you a private message w/the e-mail address
June 22, 2006 at 1:08 pm #22037Lentz and aminky,
I found this reference on a John Robbins, a Chowan Indian, relating to the Eastern Siouan Indians.
“In 1758, “James Bennett, John Robbins, Chief men of the Chowan Indians” sold 300 acres of Indian land by deed proved in Gates County, and again in 1763 there appears a record of “James Bennett, James Bennett jr., Amos Bennett, being Bennett’s Creek Indians” sold land acknowledged in Chowan County Court. Though a clear record existed to support the Chowan’s continued claim to their land, this did not stop several local white land speculators from attempting to uproot them. “

June 22, 2006 at 1:08 pm #22121Tarcarion, Do you happen to know at what age children were allowed to aquire land. I have a Thomas c that was from Norfolk Va, and his son was from Westmore ,Va which is close if not in the middle of the Chowan county,
I have e-mailed and asked ,but have not heard anything from them.

What other family lines do you have? What other families came through Bertie, Chowan, Gates and Edgecombe? When all these counties were created Tuscarora were shattered all over these areas as were several other tribes. Most of eastern North Carolina was Tuscarora Country until the Tuscarora War 1713-1716. I put all 3 years in there because it took that long for things to calm down. Alot of people try to say all the Tuscarora went north but in reality only about half of them did. Some went into Virginia and some returned to North Carolina. I have one instance in my lines were you can track one of my families from Bath County (alot of the fighting during the war was in this area) into Virginia(Southampton County near the Nottoway Reservation) right after the war, couple years later I pick them up on Toisnot Swamp in what is now Wilson County, NC where alot of other Tuscarora and Nottoway families are located. Soon after this several of the families started heading south into Bladen, Robeson,, Sampson and several other counties. There are thousands of indians in these areas today. Several siblings of my lines headed into Robeson County and they are today under what is called the Lumbee bill although there is not a historical tribe called the Lumbee. We stayed on Toisnot Swamp and it is still my family home to this day although I live in southern Alabama I go home whenever I can. I will be going home in Sept. for heritage days the Tuscarora will be doing a social dance at the celebration. I’m looking forward to it. I have thought the Robbins could have been part of the Chowan people but have not been able to prove it. However several of my family lines were up around Bennett’s Creek reservation I have not seen the Robbins there.

I asked several people (not experts) and the general concensus was 18 years but each state could be different and different time periods would probably change things too. My best guess is that the government, first and foremost cares about taxes getting paid. I assume that if a person was underage and somehow aquired land, either by inheritance or purchase, the “Head of Household” would be responsible for paying the taxes. If the person was “of legal age” (again I’d assume 18 years old), I would think that the actual owner (person whose name the land was in) would be responsible for the property and taxes.
But this is all guesswork on my part. You might call the county courthouse and ask them. Also a realtor would probably know, and a good one would know the history of land owner’s requirements. Not much of an answer, I know.

You wrote, “I looked up the next generation they also have a John Robbins son….”
I found several Robbins in Edgecombe Co. in the 1790 Census (Halifax District).
1st # free white males 16 year upwards and head of families
2nd # free white males under 16 years
3rd # free white females and head of families
4th # all other free persons
5th # slaves
Robbins, John…………………………….1-1-3-0-15
and also;
Robbins, Williams………………………..2-4-4-0-0
Robbins, Jacob……………………………5-3-3-0-0
Robbins, Roland…………………………..1-5-3-0-0
Robbins, Sarah……………………………1-0-4-0-0
Robbins, William………………………….1-3-2-0-0
Note that this John Robbins must have been “well-to-do” as he had 15 slaves.

If you search the Miscellaneous Deeds (part 1 thru part 18) for the Edgecombe Co. NC Archives (there’s a bunch in part 4 especially)
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/edgecombe/edgecombedeeds.htm
you’ll find many land transfers that the Robbins family made.

I have been reading over alot of these deeds from part 4 you mentioned earlier. It appears the Robbins are near my Moores and my Taylors. At this point the lands in these deeds are in an around Speed in northern Edgecombe. Later on these folks started moving south many stopping near the borders of present day Wilson County or just over the line. The Etheridge family did this too leaving Speed to the white folks. LOL All of these families custered together in an area crawling with mixed bloods apparently they fit right in cause they started marrying each other right of the bat. I have heard many times that Speed was once populated by mixed bloods but they moved on…they sure did. They ended up in Gardners in Wilson Cty. Gardners is on Hwy42 between Pinetops and Wilson. The Etheridge family actually lived just to the south of Gardners heading toward Saratoga. If you pull up Gardners on map quest you can see the area I am talking about. The Webb family lives here too and the Harrell and the Varnell and the Rogers…geez the list is to numerous to write it all. We really have made a circle in that area….I mean the mixed blood population has and we are still there.
