Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Hi
there is something strange on the 1920 census records for my Thornton’s. Does anyone know why the section on the census record where it list native and mother tongue would have a line crossing out English? I’m pretty sure my Grandmother’s family must have been speaking english around that time. As a matter of fact everyone that is listed has english crossed out. This is puzzling is this an error?
Here’s the pic of the 1920 census hope you guys can see.
some surnames included on the list
Thornton
Mangum
Puryear
Hobgood
huff
some of the others i will add later. i’m looking at a printout on paper and the other names aren’t clearly visible.
I found the orginal document jpeg format with everyone listed but, still can’t make out some names everyone’s listed white, or mulatto. I tried to upload the pic but it’s to small to view.
The rest of the surnames looks like
Sarah Mangum, son Sollie?
George Mangum
Dean?
lalla, or Latta?
Preayer?
Newman?
Leater, or lester?
it might not be Lalla, or lester after all. Look at the first letter in my realtive Cleaverland, so know i beleive it might be the surname Cates, or Cater.
