hello,
My name is bparris and i am new here. I am researching a nancy gibson who is supposed to melungeon she was married to a james moore . she was from hancock tn. I heard that she her father was a charles gibson and that she had a brother named charles jr who was married to a woman named oney. Does anyone have any info on these people
Hello bparris….I looked in my tree and online and foudn what may be some inkling about this ancestral line of yours…please know that I have not confirmed this information but it may be something to go on and check into further. I located a tree on a Charles Gibson, spelled Gipson (as was one common early spelling of the surname)…they do not indicate who hsi parents could have been however from the looks of his wife’s name and the dates it seems probable.

It is my speculation that the wife of Charles Gibson/Gipson may well be the same Oney Gibson that was the d/o Shepherd “Buck” Gibson…my tree shows no known wife for him but shows Oney along with siblings: Andrew, Euriah, Shepherd Jr., & 2 UNK females b: 1811 and 1813. Buck was born ca 1765 at an UNK location and appears to have died sometime after 1842….I show his father as Andrew Gibson and his sister as Margaret , called “Spanish Peggy” Gibson (she MD Vardemon Navvarh “Vardy” Collins of “Melungeon” fame….there is plenty on he and his line both here and online).
As to Willoby(sp?) Gibson’s wife Catherine Collins…she MAY be the d/o Andrew “Andy Collins (b: 1805 VA, d: 1861 Hancock Co, TN)…hsi wife is also UNK to me….his dau. Catherine would have had siblings: Perry, Leatha/y, & Alvis….all of these Ch show as being born in Hawkins Co, TN and UNK locations in TN. Perry’s CH all MD extensively into the Collins and Gibson families…and they too were born in Hancock Co, TN.
As to Nancy and Charles Jr’s father being a Charles Gibson…DO check with member Cleland Thorpe…as his direct line descends from a Charles Gibson lineage….perhaps he is now “home” locally and has his information at his disposal to paruse for you. Also do a search here at Saponitown as there are some threads about this Charles Gibson line and too that of Avy/a Gibson which connects with the same family.
