20th Annual Nansemond Indian Tribal Pow Wow
August 18-19, 2007
Lone Star Lakes Lodge, Suffolk, Virginia.
Free admission and parking
Gate opens at 10:00 AM and closes at 6:00 PM.
Grand Entry starts at 12:00 on Saturday and 1:00 PM on Sunday.
Sponsored by the Nansemond Indian Tribe and the Suffolk Parks and Recreation Department.
Vendors contact Earl Bass at 252-771-2476
This is easy to find by following the signs as you come out of Suffolk. The pow wow is held on the lake. Get there before grand entry in order to get a parking space near to the gate, otherwise, it is a bit of a walk. And the admission is by donation. There are usually many vendors selling a wide variety of stuff.
July 26, 2007 at 1:35 pm #27980Just bringing this forward since it’s this coming weekend. We will leave early Saturday morning and drive up since it’s not much further than Courtland. We will be staying in Benn’s Church at the one motel there. I just hope the heat holds off for this one….it’s right out in the open with little or no shade. But, they usually have many vendors and you can pick up a variety of things…I usually try to do my bead shopping here. I need to find some black crow beads for my new mocs. Not to mention we have an anniversary coming up in the next month….
July 26, 2007 at 1:35 pm #28115What a wonderful weekend it was!! The weather was beautiful…and the circle being right on the water allowed the breezes to come just in time to cool off the sweaty dancers….LOL. There were many vendors and we did find the beads we were looking for for our regalia. Bee….you guys would have loved to shop there…LOL. We were blessed to have Keith Smith and his sister as head dancers. It was a blessing that she was able to dance since she is battling MS and was in a wheelchair last year….the doctors have found a treatment to alleviate the paralysis so she could join us in the circle doing what she loves most….dancing.
We had a wonderful time dancing on Saturday with our friends….many intertribals, men and women traditionals, crowhop, sneakup, and duck & dive. We were glad to have Jade join us in the circle on Sunday…thanks for the encouragement in the women’s traditional….it meant a lot to me. All I know is Ken and I neither one wanted to leave and come home….it was a very good feeling…and a wonderful pow wow.
P.S. On a sad note…Clark Oxendine lost his father recently….many of you have probably eaten their frybread at Clarksville….they did a wonderful honor song for his dad…with the eagle whistle tribute from Keith Smith….what a powerful closing song.
