Information on this page is from Index of Awards on Claims of the
Soldiers of the War of 1812, compiled by the New York Adjutant
General’s Office. The following list is an index of claims presented
by members of Indian tribes mustered into the service of the United
States in the War of 1812. Information is presented as follows: Claim
number, name of warrior, claimant and amount awarded.
The original declarations of claims from which this index was
compiled are on file in the Bureau of War Records maintained by the
Division of Military and Naval Affairs, Public Security Building,
Albany, NY 12206. The declaration indicates the claimant’s name and
military grade, his inclusive period of service and the land warrant,
if any, granted as a result of his service. Researchers desiring
additional information should contact the Bureau of War Records at
the above address.

December 8, 2004 at 12:47 pm #12023Brenda, I saw the surname “Jonas” in that list of New York Indians.
My maternal grandma was a Jonas. Mom said these Jonases were “Black Dutch” but she didn’t know what a “Black Dutch” was. First we know of them they were from Pennsylvania before going to — I forget if it was Oh, In or Il — I think it was Illinois. At about the time of the Civil War my “Jonas” great grandpa went to Tx. (Jack County) where he married an Atteberry (many spellings) girl.
But I never thought these Jonases were Indian. I thought maybe Jewish. Long ago I read “Black Dutch” meant “German Jew” — a dark complected [Deutch]lander, or German — so that is what I always thought. I also read Jonas is a Jewish surname. So I have thought this was a problem solved for years.
But I have since read Black Dutch might mean any number of things, even American Indian.
My Jonases might not connect with these mentioned, I don’t know, but it has me wondering. Thanks for this link. 🙂
