This is one that is ringing bells for me, too. Don’t know that I have Roundtree relations but I started noticing the name because they were frequent neighbors in NC and SC, especially of my Hugheses.
Do you know if the Hughes family may have done the same sort of thing? (I’d been told that there were 3 separate, unrelated strands of Hugheses in SC when settlers first entered the area, one of which was said to be of mixed ancestry. Another was supposed to be French, and the third was the group with the money, presumably Welsh/English.)
The Hugheses I can trace furthest back were stonemasons, and a rough-looking bunch. My Hugheses seemed capable of most anything (I sorta assumed the first non-NDN to arrive in this country from that line came off a prison ship), but were more likely to have been on the getting paid to do something side, rather than the side that could pay. They were also rather amazing travelers (the same person found in 4 or more states in one life-time), who didn’t seem to get much of in the way of assets for people who were there that early.
Thanks for the info in any case.
December 26, 2005 at 4:53 am #18398Hana……. the index shows 18 Hugh(e)s headrights in 12 different claims.
The 2 below are quite interesting…… notice any similarities? 😉

Oh, this is fascinating! I’m glad I finally found a moment to get on here. Evins/Evans, hmmm. Kerry and I were just discussing them on the phone a while ago. He’s all excited and said he may have found something on ours. I think I want these books too! Sounds like you got spoiled for Christmas! I’m glad!
December 26, 2005 at 4:53 am #18428THis looks like a good place to get started. My name is Spence Sorrow and I’m trying to find out some history of my grandmother’s side of the family. Her name is Sennia Ashley. She was born around 1924 and grew up around Waxhaw, NC. She married Joseph M Wilson where he worked in the Conda Gold Mine around Charlotte, NC. They later moved to Abbeville, SC and had 2 children Joe Jr. and Nancy, my mom. I often ask my granny about her Indian backgound but she keeps avoiding it. I’m afraid she will pass on without me knowing anything.
Thanks for any help
Spence

Hello! It’s very good to meet you. I’m glad you found us. I’ll tell you what, hop on over to the Geneology Forum and re-introduce yourself over there and supply all your Family information. That’s where you’ll stand a good chance of Bill and some of the other Geneology Folks seeing it and being able to help you out. They really are a great bunch of people. I look foreward to seeing you around. 🙂 Lynella.
December 26, 2005 at 4:53 am #18450Thanks for your response and help. I’ll be sure to repost there. I was told about this site when my wife and I were on vacation in Williamsburg, Va. We had gone to look at a timeshare there and the we got to talking about where we were from with the lady that was showing us around and she gave me the website. Hope to speak with everyone again. Now it’s time to get the rugrats off to school. Have a great day!!

December 26, 2005 at 4:53 am #18794Roni – Are you talking about Cannons’ Ferry, here in Bracey Virginia?
Because if you are that is my family’s ferry. My great grandpa would take everyone over to other side (North Carolina) and back. Also, John Mayo lived nearby! That name Fannie Mayo sure rings a bell, very loudly! Mayo’s are buried in same cemetary as my relatives. Wow, this is exciting!!
Let me know???
December 26, 2005 at 4:53 am #18798Felicia…..this is very interesting. Well, for starters I don’t know where Bracey is, but the Cannon’s Ferry Rd. I’m talking about is in Chowan Co. NC (Edenton), off of Rt. 32. It curves into the Chowan River where there used to be ferry buildings, but recently they’ve torn them down, and put up a nice little walking bridge….ugh. (I liked looking at the old sagging buildings – there was an eerie historical feel to them). So, you must be on the other side of the Chowan? Interesting…….
NEwayz, my Mayos supposedly came from right there. My gggrandfather was Samuel Mayo (b. 1844 d. 1919). He was a slave. His parents were Richard “Ned” Mayo and Mary “Agy” Roye/Ross.
The other Mayos in the area are descended from Mary and Fannie Mayo, whose uncle was a very dark half ndn named John Mayo. They said he was dark skinned with straight black hair, and that he came from across the Chowan from Ahoskie. They mentioned that he came from an ndn tribe called “Rayal” (sp?) He had 2 sons: William and Eli Mayo. (I just realized I haven’t researched these two yet….. !)
I’m trying to link this family with my Mayos…….I believe they are related, I just don’t know how yet. Hope this helps both of us!
