Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
I have a William Johnson in my family that was in Northern Arkansas alonf with several other Johnson family and Collins family. In the land entries there I find some very strange entries for them. This is the link for the entries.

William Johnson was supposed to have been a consultant to a judge at Fort Smith on Indian affairs per what my family has passed down. Here is an example of an entry:
William Johnson…(Chicot Co.)…01/15/1858 assignee for TAH-HO-NAH Rep. of ELI-LUBBEE
Can anyone tell me what this means and if the entries listed at that site are all for the same William Johnson?
Thanks
An ‘assignee’ would have been someone to whom the deed/grant was transferred to. Wm Johnson could have bought it or the original assignee could have given it to him.
Alternately, Johnson might have been acting in an official capacity.
Bill
Thanks Bill,
I was wondering also if you may know of a good source for lists of officials out of Ft.Smith or the BIA. I know that the Fort Worth Archive has records from Ft. Smith and I have several on the Collins from there, but I can’t remember if they kept a listing of officials.
No, sorry. I don’t know where to find that information.
