I have visited this forum several times and have really enjoyed what I have found so far.(So much info..not enough time to absorb it all..:) I am trying to find the origins of my ancestors. For years I thought we were Cherokee but have not been able to confirm anything. I have search for 16 years with no luck…then I found your web site….maybe we’re NOT cherokee after all. I got a note just last week from my great Aunt that we were Blackfoot. Now we have another thread to chase but I have no clue on how to do this. Can anyone help? Here are some of my family names and places, maybe it will help.
Clay – Va to KY
Setser- NC to KY
Pinion – NC to KY
Gowen – Va to KY
Collins- MD to KY
Gob(b)le – MD to KY
Ward – VA
Skeens- VA to KY
Wilson -Va to KY
Martin – Lincoln/Catawba co. NC
Loncrier – Lincoln/Catawba co. NC
I’m sure these families settled somewhere in between in the meantime. Most of these families settled in Pike and Floyd co.KY
and one settled in Warren co. KY
Any help would be most appreciated.

Hello Debi…and welcome to the site from another “kinda newbie” too! I love how open-minded and helpful the folks here have been…so plan on sticking around awhile girl. LOL
I wanted to make mention of a few things that caught my eye in your surname posting: 1. I have about 600 or more Collins in my database currently…and it keeps expanding radically by the month….there are a few Collins folks that come here and they have just a wealth of info so use the “search site” feature and be sure and check out the Collins postings here at Saponitown…you are certain to find some neat and helpful info.
2. My paternal line connects to a GOBLE/GOBEL family that were apparently German in origin (My paternal great grandmother was Mary Goble; she md. Frank Taber)….and while TRYING to learn and locate info about her I came across a neat lil GOBLE family website that is a comprehensive listing site for all Goble descendants….lots of trees and pics and even a forum too….so peek at it at your leisure if you wish as it may prove to be helpful. *You can move from one place to another pretty easilly there and if you are still at a loss as to the origins of your GOBLE family beginnings…I met and emailed a wonderful mature genealogy researcher that is just as lovely as can be…she is SO nice and helpful and knowledgeable about all of the various Goble familyu branches and will email you back promptly too. If both of you, Debi and Laurie, have Collins, Gobble and a Blackfoot story in your families, you may want to pursue the theory that your families were part of a community.
Debi, with the surnames of Collins, Goins, Clay and Martin you are wise to pursue this trail. Those names have been noted by other researchers as associated with the Saponi, whom we believe the Blackfoot ID is a marker for. Pike County, KY is a common location for the Blackfoot ID, with some families indicating a migration from old Saponi territories, with surnames fitting the pattern.

I think I searched every “Cherokee”file and roll available when I thought we were Cherokee….to no avail. Now, maybe I know why!

I left out my NAPIER family in my previous post. This is what I have.

I have the direct name of Wooten too. Martha Wooten and Josiah Tanner. Martha Wooten’s father was Samuel and wife Sarah ?. This family was in Va, then Henry co Ky and onto Jennings co Ind.
The Napier and Shelton and Allen lines connect too. If you search Napier you’ll find more if you haven’t already searched it here on the forum.

The Napper family from Louisa county Virginia has been associated with mixed race peoples. I have seen the name also written as Napier.
