😀 Hi, my name is Matthew Griffin. I am looking for my BlackFoot? ancesters. My Great-Grandmother was named Grace Winktempeck; I have been told she was 100% BlackFoot. She lived in the Choctaw Nation, Oklahoma. The town name was Tammie. I was happy to learn of my heritage until I saw that the BlackFoot Tribes lived in Montana and Canada. I thought to myself, “How did a Montana Tribe get to Oklahoma?” I was puzzled. Then, I saw an article about the Sioux having a subset or something calling themselves BlackFoot. My question is this= “Am I a Blackfoot from Montana or am I a BlackFoot from the Sioux Nation?”:confused:

Can’t answer your question, but I relate to it. I awoke to similar ponderings about the Cherokee ID that I grew up with. I was told that one of my grandfathers lived on a “reservation”. When I got old enough to realize there is no Cherokee reservation in Virginia I was, as you said, “puzzled”.
Hopefully, some of the expert genealogists here can help you sort things out.

Next – want to let you know I’m new here as well – and the first thing I learned is to forget about all I thought I knew … dagnabit!

Welcome, Matthew, the third possibility is that she was connected with the eastern Siouan Blackfoot we’re researching. There may be an ancient connection to the Sihisapa Blackfoot Sioux, but there’s a ton of descendants coming out of VA/NC with that ID. We have an article at http://www.saponitown.com/Blackfoot.htm.
Perhaps she was a VA/NC Siouan whose family had gotten caught up the Removal to Oklahoma.
