Just found that I was deer clan on the Cherokee side due to the mix of American Indian and European cross roots. Seems that most of us have relatives that married Indians due to the 8 men to 1 women situation in the early Colony days. Seems to be the old timers came to this country and women were not brought over as much. I think it become fasionable in my family to marry other than white. Never knew we were so progressive in thought.
Excellent research to be able to identify clan. I’m starting to uncover more of the same pattern in my family. Mixed people marrying other mixed people. It’s interesting how long this has been going on, right up to today.
Thanks for the comment. The real given item was the location of most of my older generations were from the appalachian mountains and some Willis family from Amherst. The Appliacian mountain realtives had alot of free person of color notations in the census, so it all fit in. Also varified by the Arkansas and Missouri Cherokee tribe researchers. If you have any ancestors from Amherst Va. they could be Buffaloe Ridge as a few of mine were. Strange enough we also had French,Irish,and Spain relaitives that took Indian wives or husbands. The mothers side of the family was the deer Clan so that is the side they base everything on. I am a disabled man age 58 with COPD from the military and when I found this info I was able to verify American Indian ancestry and finally got my Medical (Medicaid) benefits where as I could not before. It was such a relief for me. As soon as I reapplied for benefits for Native American, I had benefits in 1 week.
I thought that you had to be enrolled in order to get any benefits like that. Were you able to enroll?

As strange as it sounds, under the new Obama required insurance for all, they are honoring a verbal admisssion of heritage and given insurance. I keep records of absolute proof for a backup if ever required to validate such as records/DNA
Basically any person could get a state approved tribe to say about hertage if that was required,but the issue is the federal government does not have the time to research all records. I was asked, was I 100% sure of hertiage/ancestry. I can tell them that the Cherokees of Arkansas and Missouri/ Amonsoquath researchers varified the results. The whole point was verification, not Federal recognition, Medicaid is apporved by each state now, not a Federal issue unless asked to see your research. When Obama said we had to be insured, it became real easy.
Please be aware that those with zero income as I was or those awaiting disability decision by the courts will pay zero. If you have some income you would get discounted or zero premiuns depending on how large the income, but this would be fair, I think. It is designed to be Independent living insurance for minority groups or financially disadvantaged also. Almost works like Medicare but cheaper.
So, if I had too much income to qualify for the zero payment policy, but I claimed minority status, I would be able to get the free coverage?

Everyone was suppose to file in the insurance market place website for insurance under the new healthcare rules. If you were to fill out regular medicaid paperwork and check American Indian status then it should be free under the new rules and without question we qualify. I dont Know for sure that a super high dollar income could possibly affect this, and this is not a fact and I really dont know if they would do this. I really just claim Cherokee and was never questioned again. Someone needs to try this and see if they get the same results that I did. What I am told is no charge for all indigenous peoples period. Anyone filing for insurance on the new market place as Indian should automatically get these benefits free. So I guess that would be true. Someone should do this as I did and see if we are on to something. The program is Health Care Independence Program and most states do this, a few dont. See website for this program.
Very interesting. I proved my membership to a state-approved tribe and was just diagnosed with a disease I inherited from my Scotch-Irish ancestors. It crossed my mind that I might be in trouble with insurance when we retire, as I face repeated medical interventions for the rest of my life. This information is good to know.
