Hi! I’ve only just begun… I’m thrilled to have found this forum, because I will need all the help I can get to sort out the ancestors and find the elusive Cherokees of family oral history! (I seem to have waited until I number among the ‘elders’ to start asking questions!) I’ll start a list of names here and then go back to digging… Please let me know if any of them pop up in your trees!
Farrar, Barnes, Blackwell, Teal, Callahan, Whitlow, Scott, Ramsey, Huskey, Halbert, Gregory, Crow, Abernathy, Armor, Armour. Most of my relatives are in, or came from Missouri–mostly Dent or Crawford Counties. My line of the Farrars started out on Farrar’s Island in VA and migrated to TN, NC, KY, IN, MO, OK….marrying other families as they went!
That’s just my dad’s side! I haven’t even started on my mother’s side–only Hudson, Downen!
My dad only told me that there were Cherokees in the family, but that’s all he ever said…. Not to steriotype, but, altho dad was blue-eyed, with curly blond hair, and grew a very good beard–my baby brother spent most of his 46 years either drunk or drinking, could have shaved with a tweezer and was ‘browner’ than our other brother and me. Just to name a few things…
Once I began to wonder, of course, I began to see other things. And I’ve always felt a ‘connection’ with the Native people…
Okay, this might be sounding corny and it’s definately getting to be too long of a post! Thanks for ‘listening’, and, I’m enjoying reading all your posts and starting to learn a lot of stuff I never realized I should have known years ago. 🙂

February 7, 2007 at 4:47 am #24692Welcome, Nomad, hope you’re down south somewhere right now 🙂
When you pull over at the next rest-stop (or whenever), post some specific family info with as many names, locations and dates as you have for a given surname and even if you’re cherokee 🙂 , someone will help.

Warm? Not likely! We’re currently stuck in your area, Bill. 25 miles south of Bloomington–with less snow than you have, but plenty of cold! Thanks for the ‘warm’ greeting, even if I might be decended of the Cherokee! 🙂
Brick wall #1: John Dow Farrar b. 1903 m. Velma Callahan b. 1909. His parents were John William Farrar b. 1860 d. 1919 Dent Co. MO. m. Matilda “Mattie” Teal 1884 in Salem, MO, b. 1865 possibly KY, d. 1941. Her parents were Lloyd W. Teal, who came to Salem when she was a child, and an Augusta W. Can’t find a thing on Lloyd W. and Augusta.
Velma Callahan’ father was Isaac Newton Callahan b. Dec. 1874 in Farmington, MO, d. Feb. 1, 1937. m. Susie Missouri Barnes (on Mar. 13, 1898) b. July 15, 1871, Dent Co. MO. d. Feb. 19, 1931. I have traced Susie Missouri’s mother, Mary Ann Blackwell back to Jesse Blackwell, b. about 1750 Goochland Co. VA, d. about 1833 Roane Co. TN, m. Mary Crow (on Jan. 8, 1776) b. about 1768. Her parents were John Crow and Jane Whitlow m. Mar. 13, 1758. Jane traces on back to the same Farrar family in VA, but I can find nothing on John Crow.
As for Isaac Newton Callahan–I’ll save him for another post!
Keep warm!

February 7, 2007 at 4:47 am #24745If you’re still driving, pull over.
Isaac Newton Callahan’s parents are:
James Alexander Callahan,
b. 21 Jan 1847 Crawford Co., Mo
d. 11 Jun 1904 Salem, Dent Co., Mo
who married 22 Mar 1866 in Salem, Dent Co., Mo
Nancy Elizabeth Gregory
b. 19 Dec 1837 Missouri (probably Crawford Co – next one N. of Dent)
d. 22 Jan 1916 Crawford Co., Mo
Parents of James A.
James Madison Callahan
b.abt. 1828 (one census lists him b.abt. 1820) Mo.
d.abt. 1882 Crawford Co., Mo.
who married Anna Elizabeth Yoder
b.abt. 1837 (one census lists her b.abt. 1831) Mo.
d.abt. 1873 Crawford Co., Mo.
James A. and Nancy E. ‘s marriage, birth & death dates from another researcher and I can only say the census ages generally support the years.
Census records confirm the bulk of the additional info except for Anna being a Yoder (don’t know so far) and that James Sr’s middle name was ‘Madison’ and the years that he and Anna died. Their ‘b.abt’ dates are from census records with only the one diviation.

……………………………………….
“Mattie” is of course a nickname. Census records list her alternately as Mattie, Martha, and Martha M.
Her mother Augusta is most likely an ELMORE whose father Dominicus was from E. Canada and her mother Martha was from Maine and this Martha “Sr” has a father b. NH with a mother b.Maine, ties the following together with a high degree of probability – ‘trust’ as always, but verify.
Augusta’s maternal grandfather was most likely Zachariah Butterfield, b.abt. 1783 NH (census listed below).
Lloyd Teal/Teel was b.abt. 1834 Ohio, maybe Clermont Co. on the Ohio River.
These people moved around ALOT before they came to Missouri but names tie it all up nicely.

What do you have on your BARNES/BLACKWELL lines?
Bill
February 7, 2007 at 4:47 am #24748Care to share info on your Teal’s and Crow’s? I might be able to help.
February 7, 2007 at 4:47 am #24751Just an interesting tidbit. There is a Farrar listed on one of the treaties that Joseph Street, the Indian agent in Prairie Du Chien, WI. As I recall, it listed this person as being married to a Fox woman.

February 7, 2007 at 4:47 am #24752Wow, Bill. It’s a good thing I pulled over…. 🙂 You blew right through that little wall in my searching! Thank you! I’m guessing you have all those documents and books I haven’t been able to afford, yet!
I’ve got most of the Barnes/Blackwell info with some holes, naturally–it just needs sorting and then I’ll post it!
Dinah
February 7, 2007 at 4:47 am #24757You guys are a wealth of information! And so eager to share! 🙂
As you can see, Bill has hit me with a bunch of Teals…the Crows are something else.
I’ve got Mary Crow b. 1768. On Jan. 8, 1776 she married Jesse Blackwell b. 1750 Goochland VA, d. 1833 Roane, TN.(They were the parents of William H. Blackwell, b. April 10, 1793, m. 1818 to Mary Ann Halbert).
Mary Crow’s parents were John Crow and Jane Whitlow m. 1758 in VA. Jane Whitlow is directly descended from the same Farrar family that my dad descended from. One thing I read said that the Crows were wealthy landowners in VA.
I’ll post Barnes/Blackwells as soon as I get some sorting and organizing done!
Thanks for your interest!

February 7, 2007 at 4:47 am #27368I am new to this forum but was thrilled to see this list of names. My great-grandfathers name was Lawson Ephraim Teal (written in family book as Lossen Ephram), married to Martha Matilda Jones. The only other name I had from my grandmother was that Lawsons mother was named Augusta. I couldn’t find much else but now I wonder if this could be it. Would love to compare notes with anyone if you are interested.
February 7, 2007 at 4:47 am #27369Uh oh, more Teal’s. 😀
My Teal’s have been around the Darlington District in South Carolina (1750’s-forward), Lincoln County, TN (early 1800’s-forward), Middle TN (Bedford and Coffee County, TN area (1820’s-forward), Williamson and Saline County, IL (1840’s-forward), and southeast MO (1890’s-forward).
February 7, 2007 at 4:47 am #27371🙂 HEllo all….I failed to introduce myself in my earlier DUNN post. I’m sorry I don’t recognize the surnames you’ve given…hopefully someone else can help. I’m also hoping to get some help from the group and possibly find some common names.
I’ve documented my line through the following names…afterwhich I need help!
The Indian story is most pronounced in the Dunn line, but i’ve heard “rumors” in other lines:
BARNES: William L. Barnes b KY…lived in Pike, CO MO. Daughter was Rhoda F. Barnes b 1853 Pike, MO. She married Charles M. Rice
RICE: Rev. George Rice b 1822 KY and lived in KY, MO, CO, KS…traveled as a preacher….his wife was Mary GILL and their son was Charles M. Rice b 1846 MO m. Rhoda Barnes
GILL: traced to John GILL b 1789 KY with daughter Mary B. Gill mentioned above.
BLOCKER: Michael L. Blocker b 1789 NC, wife Rebecca HENDRY (NC or GA)and her parents were:
HENDRY: Micajah and Lydia MOARLIN
Can anyone help me with these lines, especially the Dunn line mentioned in the other post??
Many thanks,
Melanie
February 7, 2007 at 4:47 am #27373In my haste of being new, I forgot to mention these other surnames I’m seeking info on. I’ve documented through the names given and there’s “Indian” possibly in these lines…
COLLINS: Joseph b 1815 TN married Sarah MULINAX b 1816 TN
They traveled from TN – KY-
Son Wright Lewis Collins b 1846 TN married Amelia Virginia MCWHORTER b 1858 LA They seemed to travel from TN to KY to IN to TX where they died in the Houston, TX area.
MCWHORTER: J. P. (b1834 KY) and Mary V(middle name…surname unknown) (b 1844 LA) McWhorter are Amelia’s parents.
Seeking Joseph Collin’s parents and Sarah Mulinax’s parents as well as J. P. McWhorter’s parents and the surname for Mary.
I looked at the Collins posts but somehow didn’t come across a Joseph. I’m hoping that perhaps he is a sibling to one of these others.
I have most of the siblings for the folks above if that helps someone, too.
Many thanks,
Melanie
