I can’t wait to see the new movie. Does anybody know just when it will be released?
I have been watching the movie “Into the West”. I have enjoyed it and it has given me an idea of just some of the hardships our people faced. It has also brought tears to my eyes at times.

I’m pretty sure at that point when your Ancestors were first being listed as white, they were not filling out any forms. The census man would come by and write what he pleased, and since there was no category for “Indian” you were lucky if he called you white. The only other alternative was Black or Mulatto, and if that’s how you were categorized, it would have severely restricted your rights, and the rights and opportunities of your children.

Oh Brenda I’ve cried my eyes out especially when the children were taken to the Carlisle School.

It is amazing how a less romanticized movie can cause so much thought and emotion, on Saturday night Juan and I watched the last episode Ghost Dance and I have not cried that hard in along time when they showed the Massacre at Wounded knee, My Husband even sobbed, I feel like I am torturing myself but I feel like I need reminders as to why we are, who we are today and as Native People where we need to go. Though it is terribly painful it is awe inspiring.
During the Massacre all I could think of was the Babies all the babies and children and Juan said that was one of the most EVIL acts of all time done by EVIL men.
My Husband then just said how could they? The grandmothers the mothers the babies HOW? I am choking up now, this is why I could not read all of “Bury MY Heart at Wounded Knee” and according to that book it was 10 times worse than what was showed on TV.
I only caught the last half an hour of the boarding schools and I know elders who are still living that were in the Boarding schools, I have heard the horror stories.
My greatest hope for the outcome of this movie is that Americans see more truth of what happened and Steven Speilburg more than most directors of Native movies I think did justice, the best that he could tell on Television and instead of putting it in a theatre he tried to put it on Television to reach a larger audiance.
TNT said you could purchase it in October, probably on their website.
By the way, “Into the West” comes out as a widescreen special edition “directors cut” in October on DVD.
The New World with big stars like Collin Ferrell, Christopher Plummer and others comes out in November.
I saw the trailer when I went to see that epic in filmmaking, “The Fantastic Four” (yawn!). It looks to be very good. Of course, don’t count on a Hollywood movie to be very accurate. They will certainly over dramatize some of the events. However, at least the clothing looked more realistic for VA/NC natives (no war bonnets & such from the Plains Indians).
I’ve been waiting for a while for a good native movie that does NOT use just Lakota or Apache. History seems to forget that the ENTIRE US had a native population, not just the Dakotas and Arizona, like most westerns seem to portray.
Christina, if you want to see an EXCELLENT native movie (although it has some scenes that make a grown man cry – I sure did) is a 1991 movie that’s only available on VHS. It’s called “Son of the Morning Star” with Gary Cole as Custer and Rodney Grant as Crazy Horse. It is THE best Custer/Crazy Horse/Little Big Horn movie ever made! It shows the true brutality of the so-called “Indian Fighter” soldier (should have been called Indian Murderers).
It’s a must see in my opinion. My second favorite for showing more eastern Indians is 1992’s “Last of the Mohicans”. Although it’s a fantasy movie based on the events around the French & Indian War, the costumes and villages were first rate (IMHO).

Son of the Morning Star you say? I will have to check it out, My personal favorite Native movie that makes grown men cry is Smoke Signals. I really did like the Into the West series, and am looking forward to it coming out in October, not the perfect discription of Native History and Life but pretty close, I think it would be used as a good teaching tool for Highschool students. I love Last of the Mohicans, you know it is always on here, for some reason, I have watched that movie so many times that my husband refuses to watch it now.
Oh also Great movie; Hallmark movie but awesome is Dream Keepers, Great for Kids and Adults to watch.

I picked up that name when living our in Oregon, as I was always wondering when the “tsunami” was going to hit us there. I lived about 200 yards from the Pacific and my house would have been completely destroyed if we got one.
