Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Is anyone here familiar with the Oakes family of Virginia? They started with John Oakes b. 1670, in York county, and his wife Elizabeth “Rachel” Rawlings- b. 1681 in Pittslyvania county. They were married in 1702, King William, King William VA. John died in 1730 and Rachel in 1718. Their descendants lived in both Pittsylvania county and Orange county.
I read somewhere that “Oakes” is a Saponi name. Does anyone here know of this lineage and if it has Native connections?
