Not sure if I asked this question before on forum, but does anyone know what tribal connection a Owen or Owens from Halifax Va (county or town) would be that ended up in Littleton NC, which is Halifax Co NC. One of my Plummer’s married a Owen. Warrenton (NC) history has my gr gr gr grandparents Aaron and Della Owen mentioned as coming from Halifax Co Va, but they were living in Littleton NC before coming to Warrenton. I do know that they were indian slaves for a family who moved to Warrenton and they were left the home of that family when they moved away.
Bill could you help me on this one?

I always get curious when I see surnames similar to those of the Minnesota Dakota Sioux… We have some Owens here as well as Childs, Buck and others I have seen here on the forum. I checked ancestry and here is what I found for Aaron…

These are my gr gr great grandparents. I have the census info on them and I know that they were indian slaves at one time, but I just wanted to know if specifically what tribe they are connected to. Littleton NC is in Halifax county which was a part of Hollister at one time in the late 1700’s early 1800’s. I just wondered were they maybe Tuscarora or Saponi because in Warrenton NC history the early inhabitants of Warren County NC were Tuscarora and Saponi.

Sorry for the delay – I’ve been trying to locate John Plummer on the 1880 Census without success.
I think we lack sufficient documentation to determine positively what their tribal descent was. You should use the ‘search’ button on OWEN and OWENS…. I think I recall several Owen/Owens in there in the past.
The 1880 Census Index lists ‘Delka’ Owen; the census record for 1870 and 1900 shows “DELLA” and the 1880 Record is maybe “Delha” – but is probably just a phonetic for ‘Della’ . The indicated race varies over time.
On the 1870 Census, Aaron Owen is 50, R.E. $800, Pers. Prop. $150, b. NC,
Della, 38, NC
Maria, 16, NC
Aaron, 13, NC
and the associated people living with them at various times were Jane DAVIS, b.abt. 1815 NC; Charles Coleman, b.abt. 1854 NC; Harvey Brown, b.abt. 1852 NC.
Additionally – In 1870 Warren Co, NC, the following people were living with John and Lizzie Plummer:
BOYD, Alexander, 20, NC.
……., Malvina, 18, NC (m’d in May)
……., William, 24, NC
……., Alexander, 48, NC
……., Lizzie, 90, NC
……., William, 64, NC
……., Louisa, 60, NC
……., Nancy, 18, NC
CHEEK, Samuel, 21, NC
HALL, Frank, 25, NC.
All of these people (except John Plummer’s family) were on the 1870 Warren Co., NC Census, but the Post Office was Littleton, NC.
And no, I didn’t find them before 1870.
On the 1900 Census, Della Owen, “Mother in Law”, born Nov 1828, 71, b. NC (as were her parents), was living with
John Plummer; Liveryman; b. — 1854, 46, Widowed, NC.
Robert; son; b. Aug 1874, 25, NC.
John O. ; son; May 1880, 20, NC.
James B. ; son; Apr 1882, 18, NC.
Richard P. ; son; Jan 1884, 16, NC.
Della M. ; dau; Dec 1885, 15, NC.
Bula (Beulah); dau; Aug 1887, 12, NC.
Courtney; son; Oct 1889, 10, NC.
Archer; son; — 1892, 8, NC.

September 24, 2006 at 3:16 am #23128Jade; The Owens of 1745 to 1780 of Halifax County VA are related to and associated with the Sizemores and my Green family. I would study the families of William and Edward Sizemore. This is why one of their descendants was named Owen Sizemore.
Just a possibillity.

September 24, 2006 at 3:16 am #23133Thanks Bill and Dan,
Bill I already found out about the Plummers. John Plummer (father of John S and James Baker) was an indian slave. He was originally from Southampton Co Va. One of our elderly relatives says he was a Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) and when he was taken into slavery and brought to NC his name was changed to John Plummer. We are working on finding out his Indian name. That will be almost impossible since their is no one left from his generation that knew him before he was taken into slavery. Bill, the Maria Owen(Aaron and Della’s daughter) married John S. Plummer. James Baker Plummer was my grandmother’s (Maria who was named after Maria Owen) father, also John O. Plummer (O is for Owen) had a daughter he named Owen. I grew up with James Baker living in our household and I knew John O. Plummer and his children. So I have oral history for most of the Plummers. I just wanted to know could Owen be Blackfoot if they were from Halifax Co. Va or if they were Saponi since they I know they lived in Halifax Co NC (Littleton NC)

September 24, 2006 at 3:16 am #23304Well everyone,
I guess I will be answering my own question regarding Owen/Owens. Did a little research on Fort Christanna and boy did I get a big surprise. Well..it seems according to Warrenton NC history that Aaron and Della Owen were (indian slaves) for a family named Owen…who were related to a family named Woodson…well anyway…one of the teachers or whatever they were called then..at Fort Christanna was a Owen. Well….the Woodson’s were also living at Fort Christanna at one time until we (NA) moved out and went to areas such as Person Co. NC, Halifax Co Va…where the High Plains Sappony who were at the Fort ended up. My Owen’s moved to Warrenton with the Owen and Woodson families. The Owen family moved to Kentucky, but the Woodson stayed in Warrenton and my gr gr great grandparents Aaron and Della bought the Woodson home when they moved away….so my point is the Owen are Sappony that were at Fort Christana until they were taken into slavery….and they were from Halifax Co. Va…but not South Boston as I had first thought, but around Virgilina Va which is on the Person Co NC line. When I lived in Roxboro NC (Person Co) that is the way I would go to Clarksville..which makes since that it would be the route some took when they left the Fort. I am sooooo excited. The final piece to my geno puzzle has been placed. Oh…I also forgot to mention that one of the son’s of the Woodson family in Warrenton named one of his children Pocohantas…guess there was some indian blood in the Woodson family too.

Congratulations! Interesting for me as i have Owens in Edgecomb County from 1713 and then later a move to Barnswell County. I have searched maps to try and get a grip on this but it is it is still a bit confusing for me as i am in Colorado. Also tried to find location of Fort Christina. It came up in Forum Map serarch as “Sorry”. Found a lot of discussions on Fort Christina on the Web but no maps. I am not very patient so maybe i didnt look long enough.
If anyone has a good link to any of the above i would love it. Several relatives list birth at Edgecomb County NC. That is Halafax VA now right?
I will list the two Owens from that area and have other names too but will wait for now.
John Owens Jr
B. 1713 Edgecomb Co NC
+ Sarah Duck
B. ?
Etheldred Owens
B. 1742 Edgecome Co. NC
+ Susan Lee
B. ?
Just so everyone will know. ie: Bill and Tom… I will be moving my pottery company to South Dakota next Monday. Oct. 23 and my coumpter will be down for a time. The move has been postponed for about 3 months as my Dad was ill and passed. Tom that is why i have not been back to you (feathers etc) and Bill if you find anything on the Mayo info you may want to hold it til i am back on line. This will be one of the first places i will let know when things are up and going again. This site is so valuable to me!
Thanks everyone,

September 24, 2006 at 3:16 am #23306Hi Janette,
Actually Egecombe Co is the next county over from Nash. It is in the path that some of the Indians who left the Fort followed and ended up in the Roanoke Rapids NC area. Halifax Co Va is not on that end of the NC/Va line. Halifax Co NC is the county in which Roanoke Rapids , part of Hollister and Littleton where the Haliwa Saponi are now located. The Haliwa Saponi are Tuscarora, Meherrin, Saponi and some Nottoway. Most of them came to the area from the fort as well. Others went to the Virgilina (Halifax Co Va) and Person Co (NC) line and they are now known as the High Plains Sappony. Since I have moved back home I have been able to get so much information on direct tribal lines. I have chosen to follow the Cheroenhaka traditions and my reasons for that are because of the close relationship I had to that side of the family. I do however love my Haliwa Saponi and Tuscarora sides and will continue to keep the heritage alive in the younger generations of my family.

September 24, 2006 at 3:16 am #23310Thanks Jade,
Will have to take time later to digest and research this further as i am under the gun to finish packing. This is where i will start when i get back online in a week or two. In the mean time where was Fort Christanna located. Did you find a site with the names of Indians and Indian slaves located there. Sounds like you went in person. I do really appreciate your getting back to me.

September 24, 2006 at 3:16 am #23312In message #9 you were referring to Ft. Christina; and if you spelled it that way in a Web search you’d be getting references to the Swedish colony, 1638-56 or so, at present Wilmington, Delaware. There is also a river in Delaware spelled Christiana (and pronounced “Christine”), likewise named after the 17th century Swedish Queen Kristina. (One of the better roles played by Greta Garbo was a biographical movie about her.)
However Ft. Christanna, the one you are interested in, was more or less at Gholsonville, VA. Presumably in Brunswick County — unless my source is wrong, in which case about four people will straighten us out.
September 24, 2006 at 3:16 am #23313Thanks Pappy Dick,
Spellling is a big issue for me. I am no longer self conscious about it but dyslexia is the deal. You are right all i was getting was the Swedish Fort.
This makes sense as many more of my folks are from Brunswick county. I will check it out!

September 24, 2006 at 3:16 am #23314Since Gholsonville isn’t indexed on the current VA highway map, I tried Google maps online, and found Fort Christanna on the satellite imagery (at the second-highest resolution available — you can easily see a car on the highway). It is on Hwy 46, “Christanna Highway,” south of Lawrenceville and NE of Gholsonville. The crossroads about a quarter of a mile south of it is called “Ezell.” Here is a link to it:
September 24, 2006 at 3:16 am #23317Gee Pappy,
You and the forum people are so generous with your help!
I am so intrigued with all this. I would love to make a trip and see all these places one day. If there could be a travel date correlating with a gathering of Forum people it would be nicer. A plan is brewing.
Anyway i appreciate your assistance.
Janette
