Searching for Saponi Town
The online community project “Searching for Saponi Town” is a good example of how genealogical research is uncovering new evidence concerning the history of the Native American peoples. Through a discussion forum, articles on the results of their own research, and links to related scholarly articles elsewhere on the Internet, the descendants of the Eastern Siouan peoples (also known as the Saponi or Tutelo) in Virginia and South Carolina, who are connected to the Blackfoot tribe, have traced their ancestors’ migration routes across North America.The complex relationship between different groups and tribes is examined in some depth. There are also articles on Black American influences upon the Native American history, a timeline of Saponi history, and articles on specific events in Saponi history – such as John Lawson’s journey amongst the Indians (circa 1700), Bacon’s Rebellion and the Occoneechee Massacre (both 1676).
(I’ve got a request in for them to clarify about the Blackfoot tribe.)

I agree that it is funny that this recognition comes from the English, but I don’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth, it’s the first favor they have done us in 400 years, but it is an important one. Maybe this will help to sway the thinking of some folks on this side of the Atlantic. A step in the right direction for sure.
