Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
I am looking for the Indian name for the highest mountain in the Southwest Mountain Range. The highest peak is now called Peter’s Mountain. It is between Gordonsville and Cismont, Virginia. In the late 1700s the range was called Chestnut Mountains. From 1769 until 1948 my ancestors lived on top of Peter’s Mountain and I have been looking for it’s original name. Thanks for any help. gg
You may want to find some local hiastorians or even some old timers from your area. There are always state books on places and place names. I may be hard to find that info, if you have to do alot of research then check into old maps first they are really an untapped source.
Best of Luck!
Thank you Tom,
I have gone to the oldest maps of the area and cannot find anything but the Chestnut Mountains and The Little Mountains. These are all “english” names and now am reading the diaries of the earliest explorers who came in to the area to get a hint. Thanks again for all your suggestions. gayle
Good luck with that, Gayle.
