My G Grandmother Walker smoked a pipe but secretly. She used to go into the basement to do it.
August 1, 2004 at 11:51 pm #33472I was told that my great grandmother Rebecca Edwards Davis smoked a pipe and was of indian descent.
August 1, 2004 at 11:51 pm #33473My great Aunt Jane was from a branch of the family that swore they were >NOT< Indians, but when my mom saw her sitting on the porch with braids and a pipe she knew what her own mom was saying was really true.
August 1, 2004 at 11:51 pm #33476Linda…..speaking of aunt jane’s. I’ve got one too, and her mother…..Ida Amanda MAYO, used to smoke a pipe (I’ve mentioned before). She’s my Blackfoot great grandmother. My grandma Mary (daughter-in-law) remembers that when she’d walk up the lane towards Ida, she could see her working in the garden with that pipe sticking out of her mouth. By the time grandma Mary got to her, “that pipe had disappeared so quick into her apron, I wondered if I’d really seen it!” It’s funny hearing old folk talking about their old folk…..I just love it. Don’t know what kind of pipe it was.
August 1, 2004 at 11:51 pm #33478My grandfather used to have a pipe and fill it with tobbaco, but there was also something else he used. I thought he was doing drugs or something, but when my mother asked him what it was, my grandfather opened his mouth and said that it was something his people believed in. We looked at him and said, man you’re black. He grined and continued to look at the movie as if he had heads up on something we didn’t know lmao! On his death bed he sat our family down and explained to us his native side, but he didn’t get into detail. Not to mention his cousin is the biggest tobbaco smoker I think I’ve ever seen. His place was clean, but the tobacco that filled the air was not normal.
