Just bought a Hopewell pipe. Kind of felt like I had to. It was found in Licking county, OH and was carved in the shape of a raccoon. My ancestors moved to Licking County on land that was the Wyandot town of Raccoon Town. Is it true that the Hopewell were Sioux?

December 6, 2004 at 4:00 am #11975I don’t know. Can you post a picture of the pipe? I’m glad it’s in the hands of someone who will care for it.
December 6, 2004 at 4:00 am #11978Should be able to tomorrow. There were others for sale too, one from VA, one from Tennessee. They might still be there. I got it on ebay. Not sure if the time and date that the sales ended were the same. Kind of pricey though.

That sounds cool! I can’t wait to see it. Too bad I can’t get my hands on one of those. 😉 Love & light, Lynella.
December 6, 2004 at 4:00 am #12056Since I have paid for the pipe now, I will post a picture of it. Once again, I am trying to attach the picture as an attachment. Hasn’t worked for me before, not sure if it will this time.

December 6, 2004 at 4:00 am #12057Well, that didn’t work either. Linda?
December 6, 2004 at 4:00 am #12072Well, my uploading capabilities have been restored, so let’s hope I can get that image online. Hope I don’t have to go through a lot of rigamarole to access the new server.
December 6, 2004 at 4:00 am #12692It is such a shame that people are selling pipes in the internet!
Would be better to force these people to return them to the Nations that they came from. I’m glad that at least one of them is coming to the hands of someone who will honor it.

Amen!;)
December 6, 2004 at 4:00 am #12702I was checking into what I am supposed to do to treat it properly. Looks as if I am supposed to get a stem for it and keep it in a bag, with the stem and pipe separate. Also seems as if I am supposed to use it. However, it does not appear to have been used. It came from a mound in Ohio, so maybe it has not ever been used. Any suggestions are welcome.

Keep sage in the bowl and in the hole where the stem inserts into it and keep it wrapped up, separate from the stem. Then, I would RESEARCH IT! Find out info on the place from wence it came and then search out an elder who can tell you about it. Is it a people’s pipe or a personal pipe? Is it a man’s pipe or a woman’s pipe? It’s hard to know these things because it was not gifted to you. These are important things to find out so you will know how to proceed with it. I would not smoke it until I had these answers.

December 6, 2004 at 4:00 am #12724Thanks, 2 CL. I wonder, given its age, if that kind of information about it can be found. It is Hopewell. Maybe I will ask a few questions in Chicago sometime.

Well, IMHO, if it came to you, regardless of how, there will be someone, somewhere who will be able to tell you something about it 🙂
If you can get help with posting a picture, perhaps someone can help search for origins etc. It’s great that you know that it is a Hopewell, that is a great start!

December 6, 2004 at 4:00 am #12733Yes, that is a great start. And still, Cindy, if you can’t get a photo posted I would love to see a photo sometime. 🙂 🙂 🙂 Lynella.
December 6, 2004 at 4:00 am #12749Lynella and 2CL,
If you want a picture, send me an email. I think I have a picture from the ebay ad. If not, I can take one and send it. I sent one to Linda for posting, but with the new house, she must be busy. I do not have the permissions necessary to post the picture myself.
