Found my Martin as well as other Gibson’s and family on Rootweb…thought I would share.
ID: I0089
• Name: Martin GIBSON
• Sex: M
• Birth: 1776 in Orange County, North Carolina
• Death: BEF 1840 in Pike County Kentucky
• Note:
Valentine Collins was a member of the Stoney Creek Church around 1800 and removed to Newman’s Ridge for a short time before removing to Kentucky. He is listed on the 1820 and 1830 Floyd County census and had land in Morgan County. He is listed as a neighbor of Martin Gibson who had a sister, Dicey, who is likely the wife of Valentine. These Collins’ and Gibsons intermarried with the Cole, Perkins, Nichols, Fletchers (and other) families and are the ‘core’ of the Magoffin County ‘Brown People’ and the Carmel Indians.
Kentucky
• 1820 Floyd County, Kentucky Census
There were ten Collins families on the 1820 census. Valentine, Bradley, and Meredith were the only Collins’ listed as FPC. Adam Burchfield was living between Valentine and Martin Gibson. Martin Gibson is thought to be the same Martin Gibson born about 1776 in Orange Co, North Carolina. He was bound to James Carrington in 1784 along with sisters Dicey and Susannah. Dicey may be the wife of Valentine Collins.
• 1830 Floyd County, Kentucky census Valentine Collins is living next door to William Cole who is reported to have married Obediah (Biddy) Collins, daughter of Valentine.

August 23, 2007 at 8:45 pm #28176My Martin Gibson was born abt. 1776, bound out to James Carrington in Orange County, NC 1784 along with sisters Dicey and Susannah (Susannah chooses James Carrington). Later Martin is in Wilkes Co, NC circa 1794-1797, 1802 Russell Co VA, 1806 Smith Co TN, 1808 Russell Co VA, 1820’s Perry Co, KY, where he dies abt 1833. His wife is Eleanor?
Martin’s children immigrate to Tazewell Co, VA shortly after his death, in the area that becomes Buchanan Co, VA, some years later go into different counties of West Virginia. I have all but one son figured out. Martin’s parents remain unknown although it is suspected to be old William Gibson of Orange Co, NC who is too old to be taxed during the revolution.

Martin most likely comes out of the Saponi Gibson’s who come from Orange Co, VA to Orange Co, NC. Father could be old William who is too old and infirm to be taxed, or possibly from George who d. 1776 Orange Co, NC. Other children are named for George, but does not include Martin, Dicey or Susannah on the lists in Caswell Co, NC.

I always had Esquire as oldest son, info from Tazewell Co Va census 1850. Was William the same as Esquire or was he older and not listed in 1850 census with family. Matilda Davis was the 2nd wife of Martin JR. Where did you get your information that Martin Jr and Matilda Davis were the parents of William Gibson. What was William’s birthdate?
please contact, Millie Stinnett at: Millie@mtec.net. She sent me the Gibson information and she has a great deal. This is an old email and I hope it is good.

What Gibson families do you know? If you want to share.

August 23, 2007 at 8:45 pm #28206Is that China Grove in Mecklenburg county? I believe that’s the name of a road near the dam. There’s a sign out front of an old farm that says it was established in the 1640’s, something like that, which made me curious, since at that point in time, it was clearly Occoneechee territory. History tells us of no ‘settlers’ in that area at that time, so I’m curious what’s behind that family legend.
August 23, 2007 at 8:45 pm #28215LINDA
I’m not sure but I think that China Grove is just out side of Mecklenburg County I know it is right down the road from Salisbury . And Salisbury is I want to say is in Rowan County . But like I said I’m not sure I used to Transport Prisoners to the Prison Camp in Salisbury And If when I turned west on #49 I would be in China Grove in about 5 to 10 mins. And if I turn east on 49 I would be in Salisbury in about % to 10 mins.
