Hi folks,
I’ve got a puzzle I’m trying to work out. This is kind of long because I want to try and get the full story out.
My great grandmother, before she died in 1984 (a widow when she died), let it be known that her deceased husband was part Native American from the Illini tribe. That is all the information she would reveal as she was ashamed of it, but wanted it known. Her husband was a Coventry and I did some digging. I ruled out the Illini tribe (can’t remember why, it was so long ago), but looked at other tribes in the area. One day, came across a list of US soldiers in the Black Hawk war and found a Coventry listed – fighting on the white side. So I dismissed the idea that the Coventry line was the line with Native American. back in around 1995 or so, I was visiting my grandparents in Illinois and we were looking through some old photographs of their family. My grandma showed me a picture of my great grandma’s parents and I was immediately shocked. Looking at her father, he was very obviously at least part Native American.
So now I’m looking at 2 possibilities: Native American *somewhere* on the Coventry family and Native American on the Worthey/Foxworthy line. So here are the 2 lines I’m looking at and hoping someone can help solve this puzzle.
Line One: Coventry
Charles Lemuel Coventry (7 Jan 1884 Richland Co., IL – 14 Jul 1950 Champaign Co., IL) was the son of Samuel Stinchacum Coventry (7 Feb 1855 Richland Co., IL – 10 Nov 1890 Richland Co., IL) and Charlotte Black (30 Nov 1857 Huntingdon Co., IN – 19 Jul 1942 Richland Co., IL (note, I have info on Charlotte’s paternal and maternal lines that immigranted)
Samuel Coventry was the son of William Coventry (abt 1824 PA – abt 1871 Richland Co., IL) (Note, it was Williams brother that fought in the Black Hawk wars) and Elizabeth Stinchacum (abt 1826 OH – abt 1870 Richland Co., IL) – no further information is known for sure about either William or Elizabeth’s ancestors, but it is believe that William’s father was Jacob Coventry and mother was Jane (unknown)
Line Two: Worthy/Foxworthy
1. Effie Almeda Worthey (my great grandmother) (7 Feb 1889 Jasper Co., IL – 6 Dec 1984 Champaign Co., IL) was the daughter of James William Worthey (the one who looked to be obviously at least part Native American) (abt 1860 probably IL – abt 1953 probably Jasper co., IL)
2. James William Worthey was the son of Elijah Worthey (17 Jan 1839 Coshocton Co., OH – 8 Jul 1908 Jasper Co., IL) and Charlotte Frances Lancaster (? probably KY – 23 Sep 1870 Jasper Co., IL -note, do not know parents for Charlotte)
3. Elijah Worthey was the son of James Francis Fox Worthy (30 Jan 1800 Culpepper Co., VA – 19 Jan 1866 Jasper Co., IL) and Charlotte Odor (13 Mar 1804 Culpepper Co., VA – 12 Jun 1888 Jasper Co., IL)
4. James Francis Fox Worthy was the son of James Foxworthy (abt 1760 probably Prince William Co., VA – abt 1853 Nelson Co., KY) and Lucinda Tippett (no other info)
Charlotte Odor was the daughter of Jeremiah Odor (abt 1780 possibly VA -no other information about him) and an unknown mother
5. James Foxworthywas the son of John Foxworthy (abt 1730 probably Stafford Co., VA – abt 1806 probably Prince William Co., VA) and Sarah Northcutt (abt 1730 Stafford Co., VA area – abt 1819 Prince William Co., VA area)
No more info is known about this line
Can anyone shed some light onto where the Native American may have come into the family? Are any of these names known to be associated with any tribe? I’d appreciate any help on this. Thanks!
