Our Chereonhaka brothers and sisters are incredibly blessed. A primeval forest, perhaps thousands of years old has been discovered on a swampy neck of the Nottoway river, not far from them. The larges tree in VA is there, twelve feet thick. Here’s the Richmond Times-Dispatch article on it:

Thanks for sharing that news clip. What a feeling that must be to stand among those giants. I just hope that this public announcement doesn’t attract too many people or attention.

Hey Linda,

Thanks for the article. I live less than 2 miles from this site and had not heard about it. The article is great and there is also a video with it so you can see the area.

I believe the Cheroenhaka Pow Wow is July 22 and 23 so if anyone is planning to attend, you will pass within about a mile of this site. If you are coming to Courtland on Hwy 58 east you will pass Southampton High School which is at the intersection with Hwy 35. About 2 miles after the High School you cross the Nottoway river. The site will be about a mile to your right (South). About a mile further, the next right, is Old Bridge Road. This goes to the old Cypress Bridge which is less than 200 yards from the site.

It would take a boat to actually get to the area and I wouldn’t want to disturb the site but if anyone passes by this area, you will know where it is.

I know exactly where you are talking about, given your description. We hope to attend the pow wow this year. We have always enjoyed spending the weekend in Courtland. Everyone there is so hospitable. And it’s not that far from our home in Person County. Maybe we will see you there.

I love forests and I am so glad that this forest has survived over the years.

I truly hope it gets preserved and protected.
