Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Does anyone know of an Indian cemetery at Caney creek in Pike co. Kentucky? I was researching my ancestor Meredith Collins at Pikeville,Kentucky this week and read a family history report by Lexie Newsome Wisecarver. She was harrison Newsomes great-great grandaughter. In her report she stated that Harrison Newsome bought some land at caney creek and shelby creek from some Indians for some money, dogs and trinkets. I know that my ancestor Meredith Collins sold land to Harrison Newsome which was on Caney creek and Shelby creek. I went to the Courthouse at Pikeville and had copies made of the land deeds between Meredith and Harrison. Lexie Newsome Wisecarver stated that there was an Indian cemetery on the Caney creek property and that there were adults and children buried there. She stated that she used to play near the cemetery. I was just cerouis if anyone else had heard of this cemetery.
Hi Waitman,
I haven’t heard of the cemetery, but I did find it indexed online. Check out this link:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~kypike/cemetery2.htm
It contains information on Newsom/Roberts Cemetery, Newsom Cemetery, Anderson Cemetery and the Alfred Branham Cemetery. Lexie Wisecarver is one of the people indexed on this page.
Here is another link that tells the Newsome story:
