Peace to All

So many people have heard (or had) a family story about an Indian Princess, here’s flip.

My grandmother, from Sugarfork, in the mountains of western North Carolina, used to tell me (repeatedly) that one of her aunts (or cousins) was “carried off” by a Cherokee- and she used to say Cherokee like maybe it was a bad thing.

So, the story goes:

There was a well respected Cherokee man who used to pass their land on his way doing business with or for Fort Knox!

One day, he “carried off” one of our young girls. Someone from our family saw them again, in town, YEARS LATER, WITH THEIR CHILDREN. There must have still been hard feelings because my branch of the family did not re-establish or maintain contact with them after that.
