Hi, its been a while since I was on here. Its changed and I forgot how to maneuver around here.
Since I was last on, I have done quit a bit of family searching. I have found a picture of my 3rd great grandmother Rebecca Morning Star Lightfoot Jones. I found out she was not a happy soul. In her photo, she has on a bonnett and a crocheted collar. A posed picture, with no smile at all.
To understand, my dads sister married their 3rd cousin, with the same Indian great grandmother. My dads sister just died last week, and from the one side of that same family, is how I found her picture. Its a copy, but its better than nothing at all.
From another cousin, his dad was 5 yrs old when he met Morning Star. She always said she was Blackfoot. She had very long black hair with white in it, and walked with a cane. And you did not want to get in her way. She seemed to be a very hard sad person. And it came down through the family.
From her background she was born in Ohio-dont know where. We dont know if Morning Star was her first name or last name. I just kind of wonder if her father Daniel allowed her to keep that name so that she would remember where she came from and what she was.
Her father Daniel Lightfoot 1st married Issaru/Iffaru Brown from Wayne Co. Ohio on 27 DEC 1820
Next recorded marriage is to a J. Har Brown in Wayne County Ohio on 21 DEC 1820
On his 3rd marriage it was to Anny Weir in Holmes County Ohio on 6 OCT 1825. To our knowledge she is not Native American, for the rest of the children do not display or have any say of Blackfoot in their family.
The first recorded Federal Census Morning Star is on is in 1840 Ripley Township Holmes County Ohio.
Brian said we dont actually know the very date of their birth. He has said that something doesnt seem right.
Morning Star seems to be the same age as the oldest boy, a Henry Lightfoot from what Brian Lightfoot has on the Lightfoot family genealogy site.
I have tried looking for anything pertaing to Issaru/Iffaru or J. Har Brown, but have had no success.
When I was little and started out looking, when my grandmother and others told about the family, all they knew was her name of Morning Star Lightfoot Jones. No idea about the Rebecca name.
I hope someone out there can maybe help a bit. I sure would appreciate it.
Thank you.

m. Algernon Sydney Robertson.
His sister, Mary Eppes Robertson, married Major Richard Jones.
He also married #2 widow-Elizabeth Fletcher- Nicholson
Widow -#3 Mrs Elizabeth ( Archibald) Campbell.
I found this a few months back whole researching my William Jones line. Apparently, three Jones brothers, Peter, Richard and William immigrated.

February 23, 2009 at 8:00 pm #34132Hi Magnolia,
Do you have any years or places they settled? I seen you are related into the Jones line. Was your Jones line Blackfoot?
February 23, 2009 at 8:00 pm #34136Just FYI, Eppes is a common name among the Person County Saponi.

I descend from William Jones whose wife, I’ve read online, was Elizabeth Ledbetter.
Williams daughter, Martha Ledbetter married Francis Ledbetter.
I also found an Ann Jones m. to John Daniel who left her son Thomas executor of land in VA. My father descends from a mary jones born in Wales whose daughter was a great grandmother who immigrated to NH.

February 23, 2009 at 8:00 pm #34217It is 100% sure- My third great grandmother, Rebecca MorningStar was 100% Blackfoot Indian from Ohio! I got off a long telephone call with a distant cousin, whose grandpa was her son, and she did confirm it. Her dad use to be a called (along with the rest of the brothers and sisters) “Half Breeds” by the other kids. She has his picture.
We are all getting together in northern Indiana for a meal this November, and exchange pictures, genelaogy , and best of all, “hugs” and etc….
She never heard of her husband Hiram Jones (Please look back at my 09-01-2009 posting) and it was thought that he was a criminal, as to why every state they were in, he changed the state he was born in, to hide. How do you look up criminal records? There is a letter that Rebecca wrote to this cousin of mine, her grandmother, and talked about the reservation in Michigan. I look forward to that letter. That may help.
Now, the next big question, if someone can help me-
Why and how would Rebecca end up with a white family? And why would it be so hush hush??
I am pretty postiive that some of these MorningStar families in Ohio are related in some way. Just dont know how.
All I know is that I am happy!!!
🙂
February 23, 2009 at 8:00 pm #34219Sounds great connecting with long-lost relations in such a warm way. Congratulations!

I got your message .That’s great!
February 23, 2009 at 8:00 pm #35070Hi Kamama,
I’m actually trying to help someone who contacted me because I have Morningstars in my line. This woman, Linda Casper; has seen Brian Lightfoot’s webpage, but she apparently believes Rebecca’s last name was Morningstar and not Lightfoot. Not sure how much space I have herein, but wanted to insert what she sent to me:
“I am writing in concern with the Morningstars of Ohio. “These” Mornngstars I heard were Indian- perhaps Cherokee? My third great grandmother Rebecca Morningstar was born in 1827 OH- a mysterious situation with her birth. Please write me back. I would really love hearing from you. Linda Casper ldcasper@yahoo.com“
Her second email to me is as follows:
“If you googled Brian Lightfoots page, he does a good tree, but its not all there and correct. We as a family, know she was Native. Blackfoot would run along the lines of the Saponi which were also in the valley, and she could be a mix of Cherokee, (if it was not “Morningstar” I was told by another Native genealogist to consentrate on the “Starr/Star” part). She was the same age as the Henry the oldest boy. I had my dad do a DNA and yes, we do have Indian on his fathers side. Thats what I can tell you Eric. I would please love to hear about your family, if thats ok? Linda Casper”
I’m going to contact her again to try to once again explain that the Morningstars in my line, from in and around Knox County, Ohio, are, to my knowledge, not American Indian. I have no Rebecca in my database. Thought perhaps you might want to contact her at the email address given in her info above. If you need to talk with me my email address is petty511@yahoo.com. Thanks
February 23, 2009 at 8:00 pm #35141Hey everyone –
My grandma, Ruth Ioma Morningstar Bisby, has always said that we have Cherokee in our bloodline. She went so far as to call around the other Morningstars in Ohio to confirm it. But the thing is, that’s all we have, and I’ve been working on the family geneaology.
Here’s her line:
Ruth Morningstar, b. 1934 in MO
Mother: Agnes Finan Farrar (very irish)
Father: Otto Leroy Morningstar
** it’s said that the Irish side of the family couldn’t handle “Indian” blood, so everything was burned. However, it’s also said that they burned it themselves and called themselves “French” to fit in. Not sure how that all ties together, there is no proof.
Otto Leroy Morningstar, b.1889, Gratis, Preble Co., Ohio
Mother: Rachael Rebecca Focht
Father: Hezekiah Ezekiel Morningstar (very “christian” name – we wonder about “conversion”)
Hezekiah Ezekiel Morningstar, b. 1843, Lanier, Preble, Ohio
Mother: Mary Elizabeth Polly Yost
Father: Solomon Morningstar
Solomon Morningstar, b. 1814 Ohio
Mother: Unknown – the record stops
Father: Unknown – the record stops
Some have connected the Morningstars with the Morgensterns after that, but there is no solid documentation of that and it doesn’t really fit with the family story. And I have learned that, though the rest of the family may doubt, my grandmother has been right about the rest of the geneaology. So I’m trying to solve the story. I was thinking, maybe Solomon is Rebecca’s brother. Does anyone have any information? Also, I can’t remember who it was, but someone mentioned the Thorntons…. I’m related to Thorntons as well, but I can go into that later. Let me know!
Sarah
