I must have brought the heat. Here in Indiana, its unusally cool. Feels good though.
Good to be back.
Oh, tonight at my father in laws house beside us, we seen a doe out eating the green delicious apples that have fallen on the ground. She was pretty. Not very big~maybe like a teenage deer? About that age.

May 30, 2009 at 4:56 pm #34011Since part of my family are Redman’s as in John Redman Smithwick the carpenter for St Mary’s Academy at Nauvoo Ill and your quoting Tecumseh I thought I would weight in.
Part of my family was from Fayette County near Pittsburgh and are related to General William Tecumseh Sherman. You just need to read General Sherman’s letters to his father in law Thomas Ewing to see the connection of my Myers family to the Sherman’s.
For sure we are part of the Myers family of Chief John Logan who I believe is related to both Chief Tecumseh and to Chief Joseph Brant. Again all you need to do is to look up Chief John Logan and the Myers and Greathouse families in an incident that caused the Dunmore War with Lord Dunmore and Col Andrew Lewis.
Anyway back to John Redman Smithwick. The story goes that John Redman Smithwick rebuilt the Mormon Temple after Joseph Smith was killed. The Temple was later converted to a Catholic Girls School named St Mary’s Academy. The Smithwick’s continued on with expanding the school into the 1920’s. His daughter Anglia Smithwick was my grandmother.
Of course Joseph Smith’s running mate for US President was Sydney Rigdon from Pittsburgh.
May 30, 2009 at 4:56 pm #34022Hi Larry,
Is your Redman family Shawnee? Is your family line from the Virginia’s? That would be neat to all tie in.
May 30, 2009 at 4:56 pm #34023I have talked to another family member about the Redman family, and they too had heard the same about Native American in the family. They did not know the tribe, just that they were from the east. 🙂
May 30, 2009 at 4:56 pm #34028That is a good question. What I have is a Catholic family connected to Joseph Smith in some way and they don’t want to answer questions. I do know this, they lived about 10 miles from Joseph Smith’s wife in Silver Lake Harmony Township. It seems that Joseph Smith’s wife Emma Hale was Catholic. Silver Lake Harmony Township was a Catholic town.
Records show the Smithwick’s never were Mormon. They seem to be related to Cyrus McCormick from Rockbridge VA. He invented the reaper. Both the Smithwick and McCormick families lived in Chicago Ill. The idea of the St Marys Catholic Girls School at Nauvoo was to train Catholic girls from wealthy Catholic families in Chicago in an “out of the way” place.
Cyrus McCormick also financed General Robert E Lee School called Washington and Lee College after the Civil War. General Robert E Lee was related to Gov Alexander Spotswood. The Myers family were also relatives by a Kentucky will of Gov Spotswood’s grandson General Alxander Spotswood married to Elizabeth Washington. Their son Alexander M Spotswood married Elizabeth Lewis a cousin of Meriwether Lewis.
The Myers family lost the boat business in Pittsburgh during the Civil War because the Myers family was related to General Robert E Lee through his cousin Thomas Sim Lee the Catholic Governer of Maryland.
Thomas Sim Lee was close friends with Catholic General Lafayette and General Lafayette was involved in the Lewis and Clark Expedition out of Pittsburgh. Now we are back to Catholic Sacajawea and her son John Baptiste who was close friends with Meriwether Lewis Clark the son of William Clark and General Robert E Lee.
I believe Sacajawea was Powhatan and related to both Pocahontas and her sister Cleopatra who were related to the Crows of Montana. In other words, Meriwether Lewis knew the people he was to visit before he left Pittsburgh Aug 31 1803.
Then by State of Montana records of Dr Grace R Hebard, the Myers family was related to Sacajawea and also related to Rachael Phillps who is buried at Monticello.
May 30, 2009 at 4:56 pm #34052Hi Kamama,
I read your post and contacted a good friend of mine out of VA (Charlottesville) who is a Redman and who’s grandfather is part native. I’m awaiting her response to contact you.

My mothers family is Redman out of Virginia. When she grew up, she was very dark, as some of her siblings, and others took to her mother out of the Amish who were blue eyed and fair Swiss people.
She once asked her mother who her real father was, because she was so dark, and her mother was not very happy to say the least.
The Redman line is this:
My mothers grandmother:
Carrie Ella Redman b. IN 1869 Lakeville, IN married Wm Sherman Marks
Her parents
John Redman b. 1847 PA married Almira Bennett b. 1848 OH
His father was born in Virginia and his mother Pennsylvania.
Is there anyone else here with Redman families from Virgina?

May 30, 2009 at 4:56 pm #34767Hi Kamama, I got a notice in my email cause I was on this thread, haven’t been in here for a while. I would be interested to hear about the Redman from VA too. How have you been? We are bracing for a big Winter storm right now. I just had an inquiry from another genealogy site about my Grigsby/Redmond (Redman)/Hughes line. Kind of ironical that in the last 2 days I have email notices about that line of my ancestry~hmmmm~could our forefathers & foremothers be trying to tell us something~I hope so cause I am open to know about them. Take care 🙂 greydove}}
May 30, 2009 at 4:56 pm #34768Hi Greydove, I had been wandering what had happened to you.
May 30, 2009 at 4:56 pm #34769Hi Greydove!!
So good to hear from you! I thought you were in Indiana? We are now getting snow. Up north here in Elkhart they are saying up to 14 inches!
I wish I had more on the Redmans. There has to be somewhere John Redman’s father fits in with the Redmans from Virginia. Since he was born in 1847 PA and his dad was from VA and his mother from PA.
You know whats fuhnny though, in your paternal names you also have Bennett- John married a Almira Bennett b. 1848 OH. Where are your Bennetts from?
I am also trying to figure you out too my fathers side (Almira is my mothers side) is Bennitts from New York. I have found a record going to a Silverheels and Bennitt we are suppose to be connected to at the Catteragus (sp) Reservation up in New York, but I can not connect the dots.
I think they are trying to tell us something. But where is the connection??
Stay warm!! Talk at you soon!
May 30, 2009 at 4:56 pm #34770Hey Greywolf!

MochaLocs,
Did I email about your message? I dont remember if I did about the Redmans.
Have you ever heard from your friend? I hope to hear from you soon!
May 30, 2009 at 4:56 pm #34786I have found a Robert Redman of Ohio, and we have been talking about the Redman family. He is registered Shawnee on his mothers. He had heard that there is Native on the Redman side. The thing that makes it hard, is it was ether spelled, Redman,Redmond & Redmon. Just have to keep working on that.
