Are there any regional gatherings or meetings of decendants that anyone knows of? Any close to my location?
April 14, 2015 at 9:50 pm #37256There is the 32nd annual MSU Pow Wow of Life in East Lansing April 18th. There is the American Indian Council Pow Wow in Lebanon IN April 25th. April 11th was the WMU Pow Wow in Kalamazoo MI.
Any of those close to you?
April 14, 2015 at 9:50 pm #37257Yes they are Marc, thank you! The ones in Michigan are actually closer to me.
Many years ago, through friends I was honored to visit many local Potawatomi ( Nishnahbey?) gatherings such as Pow Wows, monthly meetings, naming ceremony’s, a sweat, and so forth. It was a great learning experience of their culture. Good people who always welcomed, I will never forget their kindness.
I guess I was wondering if the Saponi descendants ever get together to keep touch and fellowship. Not likely those who were scattered to the four winds I suppose. I was thinking I had a vague memory of Bill talking about some kind of gathering in Southern Indiana once upon a time if Im not mistaken…?
You know, from what Ive seen on various threads from people who ended up in my state…It seems for many, it was random and scattered without so much the pattern that other groups had getting to this point down the generations. I think there was probably a lot of families that got disconnected in the flight. And you never know who married off into another group that headed out at different times. Its fascinating to me to see how so many peoples ancestries and migrations tell the stories of our history that you don’t get in school. I love it. Anyway…rabbit trailing again.

I established a connection to the Piqua Shawnee and attend their ceremonies 4 times a year.

I’m glad others are getting together somewhere anyway.
April 14, 2015 at 9:50 pm #37264Lately I’ve heard many Saponi descendants express a desire to get together with other descendants.
I think many of us have some level of connection to the communities that are close to us geographically. Like for me up here Anishinaabe, and Idle No More Ontario. I greatly value what I have learned in these groups. But I still wish there was a way to connect in person with other Tutelo-Saponi descendants.
The scattering definitely makes it harder, but it does seem like there is a concentration in Indiana… including my whole family until my mother moved to Canada.
I know I would be willing to pack the family up and travel as far as VA/NC for a gathering, but could only manage the trip once a year at best.
April 14, 2015 at 9:50 pm #37265I have no objections to travel myself. Its the funding mainly at this point that would keep me. Id love to travel and see the sceney on the way..especially the mountains.
