Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
I got stalled on my mom’s side, so while sorting that out, I started researching my dad’s side, where I discovered a well-worn and well-documented path that links this part of my family to Groton, New London, and Volunton CT as well as Plymouth and Salem early on. Am interested in factual materials regarding James Avery “the Indian Apostle”, claimed to be defender of the Pequot and having lived with the Mohegans. It is said he tried to fight removal of sovereign peoples to the first “reservation” and did much to get lands and other property and monies restored to the Indian peoples he represented. On this side, Avery, Hill, and Baker lines converge, probably all going back to Groton since I see some military connections, though some coming down to Virginia. Would be interested in hearing from anyone on these lines that may have removed to Virginia. Unfortunately, James grandfather Christopher Avery, the Avery that came over from Europe, seems to have been an Indian killing Puritan, with the tall square hat, stern look and all. I wonder if this caused his grandson James to move across the river and fight for his Pequot and Mohegan neighbors?
If anyone is interested in these lines, I will be happy to share.
