November 11, 2005 at 12:39 pm #17422Hi, Brenda,
This is most likely my direct ancestor. My William Green marries Dinah (Darke) Butt. Thanks.
Here are the notes from my cousin.
” 1. WILLIAM4 GREEN I (ROBERT3 GREENE, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born December 28, 1694 in Portobbaco, Charles Co, Maryland, and died Abt. 1779 in Shepardstown, Berkeley Co, Virginia. He married DINAH DARKE BUTT Abt. 1723 in Probably Prince Georges Co, Maryland, daughter of RICHARD BUTT and MARY MEDCALF/METCALF. She was born February 05, 1706/07 in Queen Anne Parish, Prince George Co, Maryland, and died Abt. 1802 in Shepardstown, Berkeley Co, Virginia.
Notes for WILLIAM GREEN I:
It is recorded that there is an indenture by William Green’s son and heir, Regnal Green I, to a Jospeh McMurran, dated Dec 11, 1800 stated that his father ( William Green I ) had purchased 297 acres of land, by deed, from Thomas Lord Fairfax, on the 13th day of J_____(blank), 1751. No record of this event can be found, other than in this indenture by William’s son 49 years later.
Source for William’s birth: Colonial Records of Southern Maryland”
There are a group of Butt researchers who communicate regularly. One of them sent me a picture of his Butt grandmother who raised him to know he was native. She clearly was by the picture.

November 11, 2005 at 12:39 pm #20446I have seen a few individuals have listed Dinah Darke Butt as the wife of William, and it seems probable to me. I have been like Robert Green (author of “The Green Tree”) in this dilemna in finding valid proof that this is the connection.
So far, I have proof of a William born in Port Tobacco, Charles Co, MD on 28 Dec 1694, and records stating that a William Green bought land in Virginia from Lord Fairfax. As well, that a Dinah was a daughter of Richard butt. However, I am looking for the sources to make the jump to Virginia and put them both together more definitively.
On a second note of Green’s in Licking County OH, I was following some links that a member provided and came across some History online which included an interesting story. It was retold of a “Grandma Green” that explained being surrounded by 300 natives and two approached that she assumed were going to kill her husband. They stated that they were not and were to be known as “Indian Joe” and “Indian George.” This is the first time I have seen this in writing that is similar to an oral story told to me by my grandmother.
This would make sense to me because of what I now know of the genalogical connections to Licking County Ohio and the Green family. My grandmother was Mary K Hartsock and she stated her father (Guy Myers Hartsock) told her this story that he had heard from his great grandmother “Lucinda.” This Lucinda is “Lucinda Devault” who was the daughter of “Rolley Devault” who was the sone of Daniel Devault and Keziah Green (daughter of William Green). Lucinda Devault was living with Regnal Green Jr. in Licking County in 1850 census. Apparantly one of these native americans married into the family somewhere, but before this I had no information that it was other than a story. Before this, I always thought the connection was with the Cherokee because of their lengthy stay outside Licking County Ohio during the “Trail of Tears” to last out the winter. Now from this story, it may be that they were Wyandotte.
November 11, 2005 at 12:39 pm #20457Well, hi there cousin!
I am descended from the Greens and Butts. I have “The Green Tree” and have taken a DNA test which was positive for NA. The story you relate is very like the story in that book. I assume you read it?
The story in my family is Blackfoot Cherokee, but another Green descendent believes they were Shawnee. Personally, I think that they were both (whatever Blackfoot Cherokee means, although that story is connected to the Sinkey line) if not some Conoy. William Greens birthplace and the subsequent locations in MD are Conoy locations, including the Sinkeys and Hustons who are in PA and then go to Licking County. My line of all these folks continue on to Iowa.
Several members of the family assume that the NA is from the Butt line. I communicate regularly with a Butt cousin who remembers several words taught him by his grandmother. They are Shawnee. There were Shawnee villages near the group in Shepherdstown, WV.
That is an interesting story. Where did you find the link? I know several folks who would be really interested.
Oh, and the Butt line is doing a male DNA test. The person starting the project, believes they were Cherokee.

November 11, 2005 at 12:39 pm #20461I recently purchased “The Green Tree” by Robert Green from Licking County Genealogical Society to save on gas money on going down to library south of home here. I have read parts of it and I am still exploring it. His explanation or theory is that William came from PA where the Dakes came from before Shepardstown. I will have to explore further for the story you mentioned.
I found the link with the following story by accident (if there is such a thing) while following some links you provided:
“HISTORY OF LICKING COUNTY. – 679
Grandmother Green states that she remained alone for three weeks in the midst of about three hundred Indians whilst her husband was cutting and threshing his crop of wheat near Lancaster, Fairfield county. She says there were three Indians (two of whom were called Indian Joe and Indian George, the other she does not recollect his name), came to kill her husband and his brother Charles ; her husband taking down his rifle, on their approach, went out to meet them but instead of their showing any hostile disposition they were inclined to be remarkably friendly, using the following language: “Indian no kill white man, Indian white man’s friend.” She speaks highly of this tribe of Indians, the Wyandotts, and delights in relating incidents that occurred in an early day. She is the mother of seventeen children, fourteen of whom lived to become mothers and fathers. She is making her home with her youngest daughter. She still owns about thirty acres of land, so that she is not dependent upon any one for a subsistence.”

There might be some interesting history throughout this book for individuals.
The story my grandmother tells states that one of these native americans married into the family, but like I said it was just a story and this is the first connection I have ever found eluding to them.
Thanks for your information also. While I am new to this forum, and I have stories from both sides of my family involving Native American heritage, I went into the genealogy search with only acceptance of embracing ALL that I find.

November 11, 2005 at 12:39 pm #20462Well, thanks a lot, I never read that passage myself. It makes it very interesting to now speculate where the NA is. One of our cousins who wrote a book on finding hidden NA in the family, believes that this incident would seem to indicate that Diadema and/or George were not wholly white. Given this exact description, it may very well be both. She thinks George must have looked NA. If you look through your copy of the book, you will see a picture of Diadema (or maybe it is their daughter). She looks as if she could very well be NA. If fact, this cousin indicated that someone once asked her which tribe she belonged to. The Butt cousin I email is a descendent of this line. I am not. I descend from Regnal’s daughter, Elizabeth. Her daughter Nancy marries Matthew Sinkey, who had a daughter, Elizabeth, who has a daughter, Mary Lovina Potter. She is my gggrandmother. You can find a picture of her on this forum at http://www.saponitown.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=922&highlight=Mary+Lovina+Potter
You can see how she appears part NA. My great aunt wrote a memoir that said that NA blood was very close in her family. She indicated that Mary had blue black hair that was never cut.
Another cousin besides the Butt cousin who I have had extensive emails with also has information on the NA customs the family kept until the middle of the last century.
I would be inclined to believe the PA connection. My Sinkeys definitely came from there. One of them had a Green who takes over the care of underage children on the death of their Sinkey father. However, one of the women in this line was born in Baltimore. We believe she was NA. The name was McCartney. I think they had origins in MD, PA, and VA. The refugee tribes and men like Hite who has a legal fight with Lord Fairfax over the land, moves among these places and lives with NA for a time.
Anyway, send me a private email if you want. I would be happy to put you in contact with these cousins.
