One of the ancestors of my mixed Indian family is Charlotte Richey, born 1821 in Botetourt county Virginia. In her pictures she looks like she is mixed white and some Indian, but she is marked as white on the census.
Charlette is the daughter of James Ritchey (born 1790 in Virginia, died 1853) and Mary Richie / Ritchie (born 1796 in Virginia, died 1878).
Jame’s father was William Ritchey, born about 1755 in Botetourt county Virginia, died 1827.
William’s father was William Ritchey Sr who died in 1775.
William Sr’s father was Alexander Ritchey, born about 1711 in Botetourt county Virginia.
Mary Jane Richie is living with an Austin family in the 1860 and 1870 census in Botetourt County Virginia. She is in her 60’s and 70’s, and I have no idea how she relates to that family. She is with
James Austin (born 1830),
Emma or Anna Austin (born 1835),
Virginia Austin (born 1856),
John W Austin (born 1858)
Charles B Austin (born 1863)
Lewis F Austin (born 1865)
Edward L Austin (born 1897)
Anyone know if these Austins are related to the Saponi Austins?
January 13, 2007 at 7:04 am #24396I don’t see them related.
Someone has researched parts of these two lines and looking at it, I’d say you could use this as a good ‘road map’ and see how much you can verify:
James Ritchey/Richie, b.abt. 1790 Botetourt Co., Va; d. 1853 Botetourt Va.
m’d -no date- Mary Beckner – no further info on her.
James & Mary Ritchey’s dau Frances Susan, b.abt. 1830,
m’d abt. 1858 Botetourt Co., Va:
John Austin, b.abt. 1827 Botetourt Co., Va (your James Austin’s brother)
James & Mary Ritchey’s dau Emmaline Lois (Emeline/Emma), b.1835 Botetourt
m’d 27 Mar 1854 Botetourt Co., Va:
James Austin, b. 26 Nov 1829 Botetourt; d. 14 Dec 1890 Botetourt Va which explains why Mary Richey/Ritchey was living with them after James Ritchey died.
James & Mary Ritchey’s dau Virginia James Ritchey
m’d 13 May 1854 Botetourt Co., Va:
Isaac Stewart Austin, b.abt. 1836 Botetourt; d. abt. 1905 Botetourt (also a brother of James Austin)
Parents of James Austin:
Isaac Austin, b.29 Sep 1801 Botetourt Va; d. 25 Sep 1877 Botetourt Va.
m’d 27 Nov 1824 Botetourt Va:
Susan Adams, b. 2 Dec 1799 Botetourt Va; d.abt. 1877 (maybe 1877, but since that is also the year her husband died, someone may have thrown that year in because they couldn’t find her in 1880… )
dau of John Adams and Mary _?_ , no dates for them.
Parents of Isaac Austin:
Isaac R. Austin, b.abt. 1763 Chester Co., Pa; d. Botetourt Va
m’d -no date- Martha G. Malcomb.
Father of Isaac R. Austin:
William Aston, b. 1735 Chester Co., Pa
Father of William Aston:
George Aston, b. 1713 Chester, Pa whose parents b. England.
I’d give you this add’l info but it doesn’t look like it’s been too well researched from William on back.

January 13, 2007 at 7:04 am #24405Thanks Bill!
It seems a lot of folks came from Pa to Botetourt county in the 1700’s, its good to know were these Austins came from.
January 13, 2007 at 7:04 am #24414My maiden name is Chavers. I married an Austin who passed away in 1965. I married a Collins in 1968. It is interesting to know that we belong to the Saponi Band. I’m researching the Chavers side. We (all) are of Cherokee heritage.
January 13, 2007 at 7:04 am #24465Hey guys…..quick question. Is this Botetourt Co. VA in Gloucester VA or somewhere else VA? We have an area called Botetourt here too. Just wondering…..too lazy to get my mapbook.:p
