Hi everyone, I am researching and looking for information on the large community of “Other Free Persons” of Richland County, S.C. in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. If anyone has anything that they could contribute, I would greatly appreciate it. From Studying migration patterns of these various families that were considered “free persons of color” or “other free”, I have come to believe that are descendants of the Saponi and other Eastern Siouan Tribes. My family line was the Rawlinsons and they migrated from Virginia to N.C.(Granville Co Area) to S.C.(Richland and Sumter Co Area) and then to GA and North FL. From my research I know that the Griffins and Rawlinsons along with other surnames associated with the Saponi and other Eastern Siouan Indians like the Bunchs, Jeffries, Harris, Chavis and Jacobs were listed in the 1750 tax lists of Granville Co. N.C. as “other free” or “free persons of Color”. Many of these families, with others, migrated from the Granville Co. area to the Richland Co. S.C. area in the late 1700’s. In this area from the late 1700’s to early 1800’s, there was a Large commnity of “other free” or “free persons of color”. In 1810 there were 10 Rawlinson/Rollinson families listed a “Other Free”. Also in this same area in 1810 there are several other families all living near each other listed as “Other Free” which are surnames that are associated with the Saponi, Catawba, Lumbee and Other Eastern Siouan Indians. These surnames included: Griffin, Jeffries, Harris, Evans, Scott, Jacobs, Chavis and Sweat. In addition, In a tax document from 1822 of Richland District, S.C., a list of free people of color delinquent in the personal tax expected of them included the names, Harris, Oxendine, Wilson, Locklier, Sweat, Gibson, Jacobs, Chavis, Simmons and Jones, all names that are associated with Eastern Siouan Indians. All these families and others made up this Large “Free Person of Color” or “Other Free” Community in Richland Co. S.C. My side of the family Migrated on to South GA and North FL. We have always been told that the Rawlinsons had Native American Ancestors but we were unsure of which Tribe or Nation. My 4th Grt Grandfather John Rawlinson, after moving to Georgia, was trying to get voting rights for one of his sons in the early 1800s and had to prove or more like (LIE) to the Officials that they were white to get those rights. In the Creek Wars(1813-1815), my 3rd Grt Grandfather, Jacob Rawlinson/Raulerson, and 2 of his brothers were Mounted Spies for the GA Militia due to their Indian Appearance. Also, in other later census records in Georgia, various Rawlinson/Raulerson Family members were listed as Mulatto. Any help or information that I can get on these families in the Richland Co. S.C. area would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Whitehawk.

Do you happen to have info from the tax records? If you have fb, go the the SC family reconnect group and you will see those surnames and descendents.
